After having both Dark Lord and Darkness, I can emphatically say, the sweet dark plum/raisin portiness is not for me. Both basically destroyed my palate for the remainder of the evening, DL for the weekend. So my question is, how many of the other semi/whales are this way? Last thing I want is to trade out my $$ for basically a drain pour. No offense to those who like these beers meant, I just prefer the coffee-dark chocolate taste. I do, however, love black butte XXIII-XIV so maybe the bourbon addition really tames that cloying taste enough.

Thats actually one of my preferred tastes. A lot of, if not most, darker beer styles go the way of the port after some time. In your case, I would say you should avoid English Barleywines and Old Ales. If I were you, I'd still try them and see if they interested me. Alot of them come in BBA and non-BBA editions, like Adam from HoTD. However, top-notch Old Ales and English Barleywines typically are barrel-aged. This includes the Bruery Anniversary Series (Papier, Coton, Cuir, etc), Kuhnhenn BB4D, Sucaba (FW) and Mother of All Storms (Pelican Pub).

you'll also want to avoid Belgian Strong Darks. Popped open a 2 year old bottle of Rochefort 10 the other day and it was a straight-up raisin bomb :grinning:

Black Tuesday and Chocolate Rain should be right up your alley. And for a more approachable (price wise) chocolaty imbibe, I'd recommend Imperial Biscotti Break.

Good to hear on BT and CR, as I really want to try those. Yeah, and most quads don't sound too appealing to me either. I like biscotti and Lil b porter from evil twin slot.

I love sucuba and most barley wines I've tried. Hope King Henry doesn't let me down when I finally try it. I'm not sure, but those plum bombs they call stouts just aren't like anything else I've tried. Could also have something to go with mouthfeel.

Peg's RareR DOS was pretty dark-fruity, but it was damn tasty.

I detected some dark fruit when I had my first pour of Utopias - although I wouldn't call it a dark fruit bomb by any stretch. Still, you may want to be careful with this one.

Just had Darkest Hour by Anchorage Brewing, which was very complex but definitely had a lot of dark fruits. It's called a Belgian Imperial Stout, which I believe means they ferment a stout with Belgian yeast, so you might want to avoid those as well.

Smuttynose Baltic porter blends both the date and raisin flavor with chocolate and a bit of roasty goodness perfectly. Try it

Yes I definitely want to try this one but don't get smuttynose here. Will def be picking it up next time I'm in GA, thanks for the suggestion.

Beers made with dark malts or dark sugars get the prune, raisin, dark fruit flavor as they start to oxidize. Add Doppelbocks to the list,

    Mmmm...dark fruit bombs.
I actually am a big fan of beers that display port-like qualities. A few years ago I had a port barrel aged LaTrappe quad that was just ridiculously good

Had a Cherry Adam from the Wood last weekend. A dark cherry bourbon-laced bomb, in a good way!

Yes it does, and that's why it (and other Baltic porters) are some of my favorite beers. Cheers!

I'm surprised no one has said Black Note yet. It's by far the best "dark fruit bomb" I've had. That's basically all u smell with that beer.
