I'm trying to find the perfect beer for my father. He claims to have loved IPAs decades ago (always speaks highly of Ballantine from when he was first legally drinking). All the IPAs I give him nowadays he complains are "too grapefruity," which I assume is the common American hops.

Can anyone suggest a good IPA that has less of the cirtus/grapefruit taste but is still properly hoppy?

    Thanks.

I would think he would like Anchor Liberty if he's into older style IPA? Widely available as well.

Try most any true English style IPA, using English hops like Fuggles or East Kent Goldings. They will have a much earthier and floral flavor, not to mention slightly more malt presence. I would go for Worthington's White Sheild, Fuller's Bengal Lancer, or Long Trail Traditional IPA.

giving us your location might help. I am sure there are plenty of IPA's that will get recommended to you that you will not be able to get.

English IPA is what he's probably hoping for.
Good suggestion above of Anchor Liberty, also maybe Brooklyn East India Pale. Has he tried Goose Island's IPA?
If you can, go to the source on these and get them from actual English breweries. If nothing else, get him a Sam Smith's

+1 for Anchor, especially since it'll probably be easiest to get. And then I'd give him something sessionable, because perhaps he wouldn't mind citrus if the alcohol was a little less prominent. Maybe All Day IPA or Daisy Cutter?

Also, too much grapefruit doesn't exist.

The thing I'd worry about Liberty is freshness. 'round these parts I find that Anchor products, unless they're seasonable, tend to be a little old on shelves.

I agree with the recommendations above to try English or English-style IPAs. Besides being more floral or grassy, English styles use a bit less hops too. Here is the top 50 list on this BA site. Search out some of them. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/150

An alternative is to go to Pale Ales. They use essentially the same recipe but with less hops than an IPA.

Try Oskar Blues GKnight Imperial red, more resiny and piney, yet delicious.

He's located in Phoenix, though I'm in DC and would like to give him some suggestions to buy at home as well as be able to have some ready for him when he visits.

I'm sure he can get Liberty and will certainly pass along all these excellent suggestions. Thanks to everyone for them.

Anything piney or English is probably a good bet. Are you limiting it to "standard" IPAs as opposed to double IPA's? Because the most piney IPAs I can think of, the antithesis of fruity flavors in beer, are both quite strong: Sierra Nevada Hoptimum and Founders Devil Dancer. In the case of Devil Dancer, add "rancid onions" to the piney flavors....I don't care for either of these personally, but there is nary a fruit flavor in them, let alone grapefruit.

If it is just grapefruit flavors he is opposed to, rather than fruit generally, tell him to wait until the next batch of Lagunitas SUCKS! comes out. There's grapefruit there, yes, but also a plethora of bitter-free, citrus-free tropical fruit flavors. Zombie Dust is another obvious one if you can find a Midwestern BA willing to send him some. I have yet to see any Three Floyds in DC, I assume we don't get them (though I've heard of the "gray market" on Columbia).

It isn't in season now, but some years New Belgium Hoptober has been pretty intensely pine-forward. I never tried Red Hoptober, so I don't know how that stacks up.

They are not necessarily strictly IPA's, but both Arrogant Bastard and Double Bastard from Stone are quite hoppy and not fruity at all. They also aren't really balanced at all, if that sort of thing offends him.
