A friend of mines dad is a big fan of oysters and recently had a Flying Dog Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout and loved it so I'm looking to get a bunch of different oyster stouts for him. I would be willing to trade for things but would prefer suggestions that are distributed in my area if possible. Since he loves oysters so much I would like to get some "brine" heavy examples but ultimately I want to put together a good variety that covers a decent amount of the spectrum. I have never had any oysters stouts and I don't like oysters so I really don't know where to start any help is appreciated.

    Cheers!

Not in your area, but Yards Love Stout is amazing! Trade for it if you can...

I did search oyster stouts but since I've never had any I'd just be taking wild stabs in the dark, which is fun, but since its a gift I'd rather have a more refined approach. Rather than reading a bunch of reviews I wanted to here some suggestions from people who can tell me things about the beers that apply to my specific situation.

Note that many beers labeled "Oyster Stout" do not contain oysters or oyster shells, etc., but are simply a style of stout meant to pair with oysters.

The above mentioned Yard's Love Stout, for instance, has gone back 'n' forth using oysters as an ingredient - can't recall if the current version (the beer is now draught-only apparently) does or does not.

Yeah this is another reason I strated a thread I should have mentioned in my op that I specifically want it to be brewed with oysters or the shells.

For my last meal, I want a Bourbon county stout and 3 dozen raw oysters. Then I can die happily.

FYI, the current version (which as you said is draft only) has finally gone back to being brewed with oysters. And for what it is worth, you can taste the difference. I first tried Love Stout at Monk's Cafe back in '06 or '07 and fell in love with that beer. Then in 2008 I bought a case and was completely disappointed. It turned out that as you mentioned, they changed the formulation, omitting oyster shells. Recently though, maybe 2 years ago, they returned to using oyster shells...

No source of info for this, but I got this info from a brewery worker.

I thought I'd read that there's now a "Yard's Chocolate Love Stout" (or something similar) but never found out if it replaces the Love Stout that was brewed with the oyster shells, or another beer altogether.

Does not replace it...just a "chocolate" version. Yards has been doing more "experimental" things recently. I had an Espresso Love Stout on tap, and I have seen some barrel-aged versions of everything they make more and more.

I agree so much with the MoHI recommendations that I went out to get me some...

The first time I had it, I was really surprised. So mellow and easy-drinking - almost like a porter - and that oyster-iness? Totally dig how those briny flavors enhance the taste and feel of this beer.

From the sound of things I should really just focus on getting a bunch of 21st Amendment Marooned on Hog Island.

Now I wanna drink it and I hate oysters lol.
