I've never tried any of the Voodoo Donut beers but after reading this thread I'm seriously tempted to go down the street and pick up a bottle. The only problem is that it's hard to justify spending $16 just to verify that something doesn't taste very good.

Okay, what is your point? Is it that Rogue seems to not understand what words mean? Extract is at minimum an additive and at worst a chemical.

I do agree that the Voodoo Doughnut beers have been atrocious. They do make some good beers, but I have no idea how they let those beers out of the door. I can't imagine them getting the green light from whoever it is that tastes beers to see if they're worthy for release.

When they use a flavor extract, they list it as an extract in the ingredients.

I can't agree with you on this. Creativity doesn't end at merely thinking about what flavors or ingredients you want to use in your beer. If so, then kumquat, lemon pepper, bubblegum (I'm now officially creative). Real creativity comes from figuring out and overcoming technical limitations of ingredients (such as the oils in nuts) and how best to incorporate those ingredients into a cohesive beer. Rogue stopped way short of where creativity is supposed to transition into execution. Like I already mentioned, they didn't even need to figure out how to use banana or chocolate, they just went straight to extract. To call Rogue creative is insulting to actual creative breweries. Taste some Jackie O's or Funky Buddha to get the real deal.

    Two things.

    1. If you've drank this beer, you already know it's extract. There's no confusing extract and the real thing.

    2. It says they use extract on the back of the bottle. The line reads, "Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Extracts."

They were probably just embarrassed with what they made, so they conveniently left out the word on their site.

Stone routinely disappoints. Not that their beers are bad, they generally don't live up to their descriptions. I personally enjoyed the Maple Bacon Voodoo Donut, but hated the chocolate banana. But I couldn't argue with anyone who didn't like either. Sweet beers are tricky.
I'm only bothered by their beers that have great descriptions but lack in execution, like their espresso stout, and I could go on. None are bad, but none are great.

Both taste an awful lot like the donuts that inspired them. Is that a good thing? Who knows, but I'd say Rogue accomplished what they set out to do. I found neither to be soul crushing, but then again, I don't take beer all that seriously.

    1. Additive, noun: A substance added to something in small quantities, typically to improve or preserve it.

    2. Chemical, noun: A compound or substance that has been purified or prepared, esp. artificially.

It's awkward because the OP seems to be jumping back and forth between the sort of shenanigans that generally accompany this sort of thread (see posts #45 and #51) and engaging in a real sort of discussion about the issues with the beer and how they might be addressed (see posts #30 and #50). So, I'm not really sure what to read into the OP's intention in starting the thread. I know what your intention is, though, and I'm not interested.

The act of coming up with a concept is fundamentally distinct from executing that style. I agree that saying, "I'd like to put flavors X and Y together in a beer" is not really creativity, but saying something like, "I'd like to recreate the flavor experience of eating a chocolate peanut butter doughnut" is a different sort of exercise. I'm happy to concede that conceptual creativity is different from creative execution, and more than willing to say that they don't always go hand-in-hand, but that's why I'll stand by my claim that what's important is precision when describing the shortcomings of a beer or brewery.

I don't know enough about Rogue to know about their creative process in putting this beer together, so I won't speak to it, but I'm at least willing to allow that they made an effort in both conceptual creativity and creative execution until I see something definitive on one side or the other. I feel like we're closer to agreement than it seemed initially. Oh, and I'd be happy to try all the Jackie O's and Funky Buddha you'd like to send me.

So you have a problem with flavor extracts, the bottle says flavor extracts were used, but you went ahead and bought the beer anyway. Brilliant!
