I have started to hear this term a lot lately and wanted to get some opinions on this new trend. We are not talking about bringing your girlfriend or mom along for extra bottles at a release but groups rolling in eight to ten people deep with the objective of taking care of others in their muling group that do the same for them in another part of the country. I know this is a polarizing topic and wanted to get some opinions as I have discussed this at length with friends and get a lot of varying responses.

There's a town named Reardan, WA that has "Mule Days." Is that what this is about?

Muling groups falls under the "I need every beer that comes out" mindset, that mindset is selfish and does nothing to build the community as a whole. Don't give me this "sharing improves things" BS, the majority of the time the sharing is done between people or group with the same mindset, this is the rich getting richer not a noble form of charity.

With all that said, I have accepted that this is never going to change so I don't worry about it. If I miss out on a beer because of these types of groups, I will be perfectly content going home and drinking a Two Hearted. I tend to believe it is a dick move more often than not but I'd prefer to spend my time enjoying beer not worrying about others actions.

If I'm able to secure a bottle too I'm fine with it, but if I get shut out I find it most odious and morally objectionable.

But the same could be said about those strongly opposed to muling groups.

A lot falls under that particular mindset and none of it benefits anyone beyond the individual who maintains it.

I'm sure both of you know this, but we have no "rare" beers in WA so we don't need to worry about this "muling group" phenomenon.

Your love of Two Hearted reminds me all the time not to take for granted all the amazing local beers I have access to, and not to get too caught up in the "limited" release beers. Thank you for giving me perspective!

Here here. A dick move indeed. The "I have more of this walez than you do" mentality is bullshit. Rare beers are rare, drink one, want more, accept dearth, and move on.

The only people allowed in my muling group are blood relatives: my grammy, my aunty, my momma, my mammy.

If myself and two buddies go to a release and each get our full allotment and then send most of that out to three of our buddies that couldn't be there and those three buddies in return do the same thing at another release, what exactly is the problem?

Nice preachy "holier-than-thou" post. Sorry that your "whales" get bought up on you and shipped out. Life must suck.
