Looking into learning more about this style. I'm more well-versed in Flanders Reds, and I thought I'd like the Oud Bruin better...had my first today, and wasn't impressed. But I know I have more to try. Any suggestions for some tasty examples?

It's been my impression for years that people living in the Flanders region really don't consider them separate styles. I know I've had reds which were not sour at all and browns which were extremely sour, and I've had both kinds oaked and un-oaked.

Can you still get Liefmans Goudenband? Ive not seen it here in the UK for so long! Im not sure ifs thats due to the brewery changing hands or they have stopped exporting here.

    Love that stuff!

New Glarus Enigma is really good. I just had the Petrus Aged Red and liked it. Lots of cherry juice flavor, though.

I think you're going to find more offerings that are actually Flanders Red instead of Oud Bruin.

I'm digging the new version of the schlafly oud bruin, draught only, but I'm pretty sure growler fills are accepted...other than that, get yourself a nice bottle of Zuur or la folie.

You should be able to find Madame Rose very easily. It's not the cheapest beer, but pretty darn good.

I was gonna say the same thing, except that it's technically considered a Flanders Red (at least on BA). Strictly going by how they're listed here, Petrus Aged Pale is probably the best Oud Bruin I've had.

Except that this is almost the stylistic definition of a Flanders Red.

See if you can pick out the artificial sweetener in the Duchesse. It is not on the US label, but is stated on the EU label due to different requirements.

Isn't this the Flemish/Belgian equivalent of arguing about porter versus stout though? Besides the potential color difference, obviously.

Geographically, maybe so. As far as i know, though, Michael Jackson defined the stes, and as he defined them they're very different, with the Flander's Red being more acedic with a more pronounced cherry-vinegar flavor and Oude Bruin having a richer malt character and a tinge of metalic-ness. Now, the real confusion comes between the Oudenaard Bruin and the more sour Oude Bruin varieties.

If you can find it my favorite in the style is Brasserie Grande Dame - Trois Dames Oude Bruin, fantastic beer IMhO.

Liefmans Goudenband is the go to for me. La Folie if I want something different (otherwise known as when I head somewhere where New Belgium is distributed).
