I asked in the WBAYDN thread last night if anyone knew what was up with this, but I've never seen this before (at least never noticed it)....when did breweries start taking blank cans and wrapping them in a plastic label?

I had read about some mobile canning operations that go around to breweries and help them can beer and I thought maybe they'd use something like this, but then this was NEBCO which I know has a canning line.

    Anyone got the inside scoop?

Its cheaper to place an order for the blank cans and add a printed wrpper/label for small batches than to place the minimum order for printed cans and throw away what doesn't get used.

Can orders need to be extremely large, I believe the minimum is 15,000 cans. Since they did not produce anywhere near that amount they use blank cans and a label. This is the same way they did the first batches of Ghandi Bot and Neighbor of the Beast.

Didn't Oskar Blues start off by doing this? I'm probably wrong in my assumption..

Yeah, (and as I was just about to post, so I've got the pic all lined up:wink: ) for, at least, Gordon.

I remember a pack sitting seemingly forever at one store I frequented. When I decided "Next time I got there I'm gonna pick that up just for the collectible value..." , next time I stopped in (luckily) it was gone.

I toured Brewery Vivant last weekend, and they had pallets of empty cans that were for their Brewer's Reserve series. They are small batch, so they can just slap the current label on the blank. I just peeled the label off my Trebuchet last night.

Marshall Wharf has a printed can where they leave a blank spot for the beer name and they put a sticker there.

if marshall wharf saves money doinig this and (which i highly doubt ) pass the savings to the cusomer i wouldn't give a shit about what"s on the label as long as it's what it says it"s damn good beer

I've seen a few articles on mobile canning lines. Basically a truck that pulls up to the brewery and it has a complete canning line in the back. Hook up a couple of hoses and put a batch of beer in cans for breweries that haven't or can't put in their own canning line. Since they are done in small batches, wrapped cans are the only economical way to do it.

Manayunk (Dreamin' IPA, Monk From the 'Yunk, Schuylkill Punch) and Lavery (Dúlachán) are doing it too.

I think it's good that it gives smaller breweries a chance to present their product as bigger breweries are.

Half Acre does it for their beers they don't brew in cans that often, or have only put in cans once.

Did you mean 150,000? Typical order quantity is 18 pallets, or 144,000 cans. You can order as low as 12 pallets with a significant cost penalty. That is still in the 100,000 can range. The heat shrink labels is the only way smaller operations can can without committing to many years worth of empty containers to fill.

Pretty fitting they wrap their "big ****" cans. That's the ultimate in beer safety

They got a canning line like 2-4 weeks ago. I don't know if this beer was canned using it or not.
