This looks like a brewery only release, but for those close enough to snag some this sounds interesting. Leisure Time is pretty tasty to begin with.

    Jack's Abby Brewing
We will be releasing bottles of our Sour Time Lager this Thursday. This beer is last year's Leisure Time Lager that has been aging in white wine barrels with Lactobacillus and Brettanomyces. We will be releasing 20 cases on Thursday and another 20 cases on Friday. Bottle limit of 6 per person.

Sounds tasty, and I'm glad to see they will be having a bottle limit this time around.

Sounds yummy. I am staying away, only because the Brett Biere de Garde is the only beer from them I haven't been 100% satisfied with so far (and because the beer budget for the summer is already blown...) - but I fully expect this will be awesome and I will rue this decision.

So there will be 40 cases total? I think Jack's Abby uses 18 bottle cases?

    720 bottle release?

    Price?

I'm going to go up Saturday morning. Worst case scenario, they are sold out and I'll grab a growler of BA Framminghammer.

??? Am I missing something here? BA Framinghammer was never available for growlers, and certainly isn't available months after it was released...

Did they list a price for the sour beer? I'd guess $6 to $8 per bottle?

Same deal. I want to like sours but all attempts have been tough for me to handle beyond a 4 oz taster. I suppose my wallet should be thanking me.

And yes, I wear a tutu.

if you want to like sours, i'd say spring for some lost abbey red poppy. also, cascade apricot or any of the cherry based sours from them (e.g. sang rouge), or maybe cisco's monomoy kriek. very approachable, very good.

the thing with sours, for me, is that they're 1 half complex/interesting fruit/yeast/weird flavors like a really good non-sour belgian ale, and 1 half barrel. if you like BA stouts, you probably already are used to the vanilla/coconut-y flavor imparted by oak (especially american oak or new oak). it's also often the case that lactic sourness (which ought to be present in this jack's abby beer due to lactobacillus) gives a creamy/milky sensation that blends really well with strong oak notes.

in other words, if you're looking for a way into sours, the barrel might be the way. barrel, or straightforward good fruit/sour cherry flavors, or interesting complexity. whichever makes sense for you.

that said, of course, you might just not like sours.

edit: note, much like with wine, i'm sure some people want the barrel to be absent / minimal from their sours. in fact, i get the impression that this is sort of the refined, cantillon/expensive-wine kind of taste... i respect it, but i don't share it. give me a really oaky red wine or a creamy lactic-and-oaked sour any day. in my experience, russian river, for example, shows less oak, more beer--and they're probably more talented in doing so. that said, i would take sang rouge over supplication any day.

re: JA beer, i doubt they'd release it if it were bad. my experience with JA beer has been nothing but integrity on their part.

Yes - visit any brewery in Germany & check out their sour program! Very traditional.

There's about a 50% chance that the marriage won't last so ask yourself if you really want to potentially invest and waste your time on something that won't last.

The 2012 and 2013 referenced is the non-BA base beer. They will also have the BA Framinghammer though.

Yeah, there really is no better place to be at in the beer world than "I don't really like sours". Maybe one day you will, but no need at all to rush it. They're the most expensive beers out there by far, and you can run yourself ragged chasing half of them down in the trading world.

I love sours, my biggest issue is that the majority of them come in 750ml bottles, and that's usually too much for one sitting.

That's why tums comes in big tubs at wholesale stores.

I stupidly did a full 750 of Mother Funker by myself one time and even the Costco sized tub of Tums couldn't save me. Never again. (And I actually thought it was a much better beer than many give it credit for)
