I don't recall a specific article or study I could go to; mostly prevailing consensus I've heard from various sommeliers and industry people over the years. A quick google brings up articles with the same understanding and it does sound like it is related to the air space.

Wikipedia says research is ongoing and inconclusive though:

That sounds more like what I would expect. Also I wouldn't be surprised if beer aged differently enough from wine that the lessons aren't applicable.

That's an example where the larger format is 3 times bigger or more. A bomber is less than twice the size of a 12oz. Plus they use crowns instead of corks to seal the bottle. I really don't believe a bomber ages significantly better than a 12oz bottle unless we are talking long term aging. 2009 wasn't that long ago.

I never said they age significantly better. Just that they will age better. And twice as much is still twice as much. 2009 wouldn't be that long ago in the wine world but in the beer world things seem to change a bit more rapidly and people report on beers going downhill a lot quicker than most wines would.

I agree that beer definitely ages differently than wine and there a lot of variation between styles and within styles too. It does seem like beer ages more rapidly, but I'm not sure if that makes more of a difference or less of one. I'd be interested in seeing (or participating in) a thorough comparison of it all.

If anyone has one of these to trade please BM me and we'll talk! Looking for one to complete a vertical I'm doing in a month or so.

Its not what you are saying it's what you are implying and giving an example to defend a lack of common sense in the trade value of this beer.

It would be pretty challenging, I can't think of a beer off the top of my head that goes into both where there aren't confounding factors. I think bottle conditioning alone introduces far too many variables to really tell if it's the format or not. I guess if you did it with a number of different Belgian imports (St Bernardus and Chimay both have ~12 ounce, ~750, and at least one large-format bottle, right?) then you could have some kind of idea. But the numbers you'd need to have any confidence in your judgement make this impractical.
