Im impressed that they put Barrier at #1. I have been saying for a while now that they are putting out the best beer in NYC/LI. I really need to get my hands on some Rushing Duck though...keep hearing great things about them (most notably from the OP )

Very difficult to argue with the breweries on this list. The order doesn't matter as far as I'm concerned. And a proper title calling it a NYC'ish list since most of them [6 of 10?] are not in the 5 boroughs.

Barrier, in my opinion, does not deserve the number one spot. Yes, they are doing things that no one else is doing. However, producing obscure beer does not translate to good, nor the best.

Southampton is not even mentioned, which diminishes a great deal of "legitamcy" from this list. Their brewpub houses, on a regular basis, some of the best offerings in the state; their bottled releases (brewed and bottled at the brewpub) and rarities speak for themselves.

Within a year or two, I think, Peekskill will be the most reputable brewery in the state.

I agree that I would be surprised if Peekskill was not producing the best beer in a year or two (because frankly I think they already are). They already have Captain Lawrence, Brooklyn, Kelso and Sixpoint in their rear view mirror in terms of quality. The fact Bronx was ahead of them was laughable to me. I like their Pale Ale alright but they have very little beer out there. I can't speak for the others as while I have had something from them all, not enough to speak to.

Not crazy about the order but glad to see Peekskill and Newburgh on the list...all of the stuff I've had so far from the two of them have been really good. Still yet to have anything from Rushing Duck.

Not a big Bronx Brewery fan; feel like they don't have many offerings and their Pale Ale, which is everywhere, is only ok.

Sixpoint, CL, and Brooklyn all make sense. My person list based on a combo of what I drink the most, am the most excited to see on tap, and overall thinking they are making the best beers would look something like:

    1. Peekskill
    2. Sixpoint
    3. CL
    4. Newburgh
    5. Brooklyn
    6. Kelso
    7. Greenport
    8. Barrier
    9. Someone like Chelsea or Spiderbite (stouts have been good)
    10. Singlecut (IPA's have been good)

I live forty minutes north of Peekskill, and forty minutes northeast of Rushing Duck in Ulster County.

I like this post/topic: Info...and more info. And I have a chance to find and appreciate some new beer not far from my area. With all the press that Midwest and West Coast breweries get (deservedly, I should add), it's always good to come upon any props for the tri-state (NJ/NY//PA) beer scene.
I haven't sampled enough of the listed breweries yet to rate a top 3. Now I'll have to get there.

Really really loved the Rushing Duck I've had (and it's great to see them mentioned), but it's hard to think of them as NYC-ish (so far). They might be much closer to NYC than Greenport, but Greenport is in walking distance to a train stop (which is a big deal in this town) and their beer has much more representation in NYC.

Long Ireland would never make it to a list like this but that's too bad. They don't focus on sexy geek-beer as much and put out some solid classics instead. Wish there were more like 'em.

Sad to say that NYC has so few great breweries that the best of a top ten list need to be culled from nearby areas. Even sadder, Bronx, until recently, contract brewed out of the area, and Sixpoint still brews all its canned beers out of state.

I'm not sure you could even get a list of ten actual NYC breweries

    1. Chelsea
    2. Brooklyn
    3. Sixpoint
    4. Kelso
    5. 508 Gastro
    6. Bridge and Tunnel
    7. Rockaway Brewing
    8. Bronx
    9. City Island
    probably missing a few...but...

I don't really expect to find much beer brewed (or mass-produced) in the city. When I first saw the thread title I thought "10 NYC breweries, yeah that'll cover them all." You have to start looking at some small ones. Let's see: in addition to the 4 in the Voice article there's Chelsea, 508, Birreria, Bridge and Tunnel, Singlecut (I like their stuff), and Heartland. That's 10.

The article was a nice read, thanks for the link. I like some of these guys more than others but that's just me.

Happy 4th Anniversary to Greenport. Their party is this weekend.

EDIT: forgot Rockaway... Nice thinking brooklynbrews. Don't know City Island.
