I'm not sure why BrewDog doesn't get the recognition that they deserve. Tokyo*, Paradox, Cocoa Psycho, Abstrakt (series), Dogma, Hardcore IPA...etc. are all amazing beers. Why doesn't anyone give these guys credit for making such an amazing lineup?

In general it is because they are inconsistent. Those beers are good, so is Punk on its day and a bunch of other stuff they have done but some beers have just been average or bad.

In the American context, they also get caned because of price.

It does get pricey. I've been ordering direct from Scotland. I have to buy in bulk to justify the $60+ shipping cost.

I've never tried any of BrewDog's offerings. The price always scares me away. Or I think I'd be better off buying local for freshness issues when it comes to their IPAs.

I've had it fresh in Europe and it's "OK".

Toe me, 5am saint is a real good beer. Maybe their best. It's true though, their prices aren't that friendly.

Well, every European brewery are way underrated here.

Oh, except few Belgians (Trappist, Fantome, Cantillon, 3 Fonteinen etc.)

Completely agree. Had their Libertine Black Ale yesterday, world-beater stuff right there.

I think people ( on this board atleast ) just get turned off by their attitude, marketing approach, 50%+ ABV shenanigans, etc; Which is ironic considering it's more akin to what you see in american craft beers than anywhere else.

I've always been disappointed with them. The beers I've tried have easily been bettered by other local breweries and their stronger beers simply don't punch their weight in my opinion.

    Too much bs marketing
    Too Pricey
    Too Inconsisent

They have so much potential with the investment they receive, if they actually focused on being a brewer instead of being marketing company they might actually get somewhere...

As it stands they are producing too my many substandard beers with gimmicks and trying to push beer into a new demographic that is hipsters. I personally think within 3 years they will sell the company for a big stack of cash!

It's all about the money for those guys

To me they seem like they are more interested in shaking things up than making great beer, clowning around with stunts to attract attention (as if us craft beer lovers wouldn't be excited by, say...beer that tastes great), and making points rather than making fine additions to craft culture. While some may argue that putting a dramatically overpriced beer into a dead squirrel is brilliant marketing, I say it is the ultimate "Bronx Cheer" to those who might be foolish enough to buy it. Screw Brewdog, their beer is above average and their antics are below childish.

I for one don't mind their marketing. Of course, I'm also probably in their prime demographic.

And for the record, I think Tactical Nuclear Penguin is a maligned beer. If it was $30/bottle it would be compared to a poor mans' Utopias (more for ABV than similar taste). Never had Sink the Bismarck, but I bet it's similarly tasty. The 0.5% ABV version of Nanny State IPA (I think it's now 1%) is probably one of the best low/no alcohol beers I've ever had.

Hardcore IPA will always have a special place in my heart as well when it's fresh and was a gateway to imports to me, believe it or not, lol.

I think they get plenty or praise. Well, that's the case this side of the pond anyway. Their marketing doesn't irritate me but they are total attention *****s. The whole CAMRA debacle cast them in a very poor light and their constant rhetoric of how the British beer scene is 'sick' and they are the 'doctor' though tongue in cheek is tiring. Aside from that it's utter rubbish.

As for the beers, I think their core range is really strong. Can't say I'm a fan of any of their special release beers such as the Abstrakt series. Took my chance on them, paid too much and inevitably walked away disappointed. I've rarely gone a week without picking up some of their beers which is the best compliment I can give them.

As for the US BA's not giving them the credit they deserve, well that's totally understandable to me. You are probably paying a high price for their beers when there are far superior beers to be had in your own back yard.

I just view them as a foreign version of Rogue. More flash than substance and overpriced. That said, I haven't really tried much of their beer....but their collaboration with Three Floyds, Bitch Please, was absolutely awful.

If you get a chance, go to their bar in Edinburgh. Any doubts you have about the quality of their beers will end there.

Mediocre beers (at best), ridiculous prices, and for quite a while the guys that run Brewdog came off like complete and total pricks in their public comments and "marketing".

With so much good beer around, why bother with a couple arrogant pricks who think they're god's gift to beer?

    [edit]

Or, a short version... no, brewdog is not underrated.
