I was reading the Bros. review of the Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout and noticed that they both remarked on its price point--but agreed it was worth it. Under $10 for a sixer of craft beer is more and more the standard these days, and that's about what I'd expect to pay for this beer. I scratched my head for a second and then realized that their reviews are from 2001/2002. So basically this beer's price has remained fairly consistent for the past decade?

I think we all appreciate a good deal but I can't think of anything offhand that has effectively had the same price or gotten cheaper over the past decade. Even from successful breweries which have expanded production and distribution. So what say you all? Anything you notice that's had the same price or gone down in price?

I've noticed new breweries with mediocre beer charging way over what their wack beer is worth.

I've been paying just about the same price for Bell's year-rounders for damn near a decade now. We're actually gonna be dropping all of their sixers by a buck at the store where I work. And that's not a sale price. Just the daily price.

Im not sure about that. There is no standard, it all depends on the brewery. If anything, the standard these days is 10 dollar 4 packs.

Back around 10 years ago Anchor prices were usually a buck more expensive than anyone else- yet they managed to stay right where they were for all that time and now are even cheaper than many brewers, at least here in the NYC/NJ area.

Most of the early "craft" beers in the US priced their beers at just about a dollar a bottle, circa 1980. If you go by the BLS's Inflation Calculator - that's about $2.83/bottle in 2013 dollars.

(By comparison, at the time, Euro imports typically cost in the region of $15-20 a case/ $5 a sixpack).

Speaking of Anchor - here's coupon from a 1982 Illinois paper (i.e., not a local CA price, where Anchor was closer to $4/six).

So, full price that's the equivalent of $14.49 today - and even w/coupon* it was going for close to $11 in today's dollars.

*Damn! "Expired"- I really gotta clean up all those coupons under the magnets on the refrigerator!

First: Barney Flats was the one that hooked me. Just gotta give it the love it deserves on that level.
Second: I may be newer to the craft scene (~5 years), but I'd say I've noticed more brews staying at the same price point(ish) than necessarily jumping markedly (controlling for location, of course). Considering the economy/price increases elsewhere this is a pleasant surprise to me.
Ex: Stone bombers have always been right around 5-6 bucks as long as I can remember.

In related news: Talking to a distributor the other day and they were saying that Evil Twin is planning to bring their price down in the near future, so that's exciting news as far as I'm concerned!

No. No it's not. The vast majority of breweries (at least those that use multi packs) are still putting their beers in 6pk form. For every brewery like Green Flash putting out $10/4pks, there's dozens of breweries like Caldera, Elysian, Deschutes, Bell's, New Glarus, Alaskan, Sea Dog, Lost Coast, Lagunitas, and Uinta putting out 6pks for $10 or less.

I paid $12 for a sixer of Samuel Smith's back in the early 90's. Now I can find it for about $9 per 4 pack.
