Probably because Matty_Monster here was the first very public case of an Instagram trader. I'm sure there's plenty of fine folk there, just like there's plenty of fine folk around here, despite the fact that we seem to have a weekly Bad Trader thread now...

yeah i went through this thread as well as the one that got locked (that one is a trip ) and it is pretty shitty to say the least. i'm still a newb to trading (only have a few done) but honestly i don't think its that difficult to use your better judgement especially on here. i know in this case it was a bad IG trader, but if you're going to trade with someone through BA and they have a huge list of completed trades then chances are you should be in good hands, but if you try to trade with someone who is brand new to BA and not much trades done at all thats a pretty big red flag and should be easily avoided. i was skeptical at first to do my first trade through instagram since its just a simple app and nothing like BA. but i felt a lot more comfortable when i saw pictures being posted of lots of various trades done and the other users interacting back and forth about it so i just went for it.

maybe i should just toss willing to ship first in my profile, i'll probably be able to get this one done now...still getting crickets :slight_frown:

Why even bring up comparative responsibility in this case? In line with this philosophy, the only way to not bear any responsibility would be to only trade if the other trader ships first in all cases - and then no trading would get done. What matters here is that the OP got no box of any kind and for that Matty bears full responsibility.

Did you have a chance to read the old thread before it was deleted? There was a fair amount of ambiguity about what bottles were agreed upon, even through the point where the OP shipped. I think comparative responsibility is definitely part of the discussion.

That would only become part of the discussion if Matty had sent a box that the OP didn't like. Matty sent no beer whatsoever - so total dick move by him and he bears all the responsibility.

I have read it and the only ambiguity was over which beers Matty would send. Had the OP gotten a box from Matty that displeased him, then he would bear some responsibility for not getting the exact details straightened out before the trade. Period. The OP sent $160 worth of beer to someone who has been enjoying that beer without sending any beer in return. Matty stole that beer. How can the OP bear responsibility here?

It's more of a cautionary tale for/about inexperienced traders. If you're getting the runaround about parts of the deal and/or you're swapping bottles in and out through muddled communication, don't put $160 of beer in the mail until things are solid.

He is unquestionably owed a box or, at the very least, that money back. Regardless of how this is resolved, Matty_Monster still needs to be on the Bad Trader list based on his conduct. (Especially if he just PayPals the money back. Don't think the OP was looking to just round up some beers for a random dude in CA and toss it in the mail.) However, with all the red flags and wonky communication I can't say the OP did nothing at all wrong if he's leaving himself exposed.

Waitjustagoshdarnminute--this thread can't end until OP confirms he was at least sent some dough by this gross human being. There must be recompense and resolution.

Folks need to take responsibility for the trades they agree to. There are enough bad trades happen that there was no warning sign. There are enough good traders so that if there are warning signs of any kind, just. don't. make. the trade.

Here's my issue with it, and I'd include Reddit, and many other non beer specific sites as well. You're going to get a lot of beer transients on those sites. i.e. people who get momentarily interested in craft beer, find trading to be a cool idea, and go for it. After a couple of months and a few trades, they will get bored and move on, perhaps with 2-3 open trades left holding the bag. It's so easy to run away from those sites when things go south.

Here, on BA (or RB), I feel people are pretty damn committed to the geekier side of craft beer, particularly once they have been around for a while. Active users who post in forums and write reviews aren't going to screw me out of $50 in beer unless something really crazy happens. So, as long as noobs ship first, I don't worry about people on BA.

Lastly, when something goes wrong around here, the community tends to rally, in numerous ways. Good luck getting support on Instagram.

As a non-personal reason why I dislike Instagram trading. (as this wouldn't apply directly to me) I think noobs trading with noobs is a bad idea. It causes process/logistic problems all the time, they pick up bad habits (communication, packing, extras), and 95% of bad trades seem to involve a noob who wasn't asked to ship first. Instagram is going to be made up of almost entirely noobs, so most of the trades that go on there are going to be noob-on-noob. I guarantee the screwjob rate on Instagram is much higher than it is here.

i definitely see where you're coming from, i think its all about using good judgement. for me it was relatively easy and the communication was great on both ends, simple and to the point. since i was the newb going into it with zero trades under my belt i was more than willing to ship first but he took the initiative and sent me a box first told me to fill it up and send it right back, quick and easy. honestly i feel like i can definitely get a good read on someone from the get-go whether they're gonna screw me over or not. luckily i haven't had a bad experience yet *knock on wood* i honestly feel for people who do get scammed and it sucks no question. i'm in the process of completing my first trade through here (this is my 4th one now) and this is another person i found through IG.

i haven't bothered going through stuff like reddit, i've browsed that once and it just felt like a crap shoot. also found a trade group on facebook full of pretentious assholes so i left that in a heart beat. i haven't had lucky with my ISO:FT threads yet but people on here have been more than helpful about trade value and what i should expect in certain trades etc. maybe the rules should change a bit to avoid bad trades? i know it's been said that people with a ton of rep and lots of completed trades are obviously gonna ask someone else to ship first if they haven't done any before but maybe there should be something against 2 people that haven't traded with anyone else, could be 2 scammers that just cross paths and nothing happens who knows but i feel like some of these issues can be easily avoided, maybe more requirements in order to trade? karma/active on BA etc
