This was inspired by another thread when a guy had a question about what to do about a beer mooch at a tasting dinner.

I know no one likes to think they are a beer mooch but if we're being honest with ourselves some of us are beer mooches and everyone probably is at some point in our lives. We all have our excuses/justifications so if you are a beer mooch let's hear them. I'll start.

I have two great friends who are really into beer and super generous. My two friends have really shown me the way and taught me a lot about beer and this website has certainly helped too. With all that said I drink so much of their beer and can never repay it. I always did bring something whenever I went over but it was never of the same quality of the stuff they gave me.

So here are my excuses for mooching:
    1. I was a newb and didn't have the education to know what was good (Is ignorance about craft beer a good excuse in this day in age with the internet
    2. I didn't have access to the good stuff
    3. They both make way more money than I do so can spend more on beer (I do try to spend what I can and sometimes spend too much for my budget)
    4. We only drink at their place. (They never accept invites to come over because they don't like to drive when they can avoid it)
    5. They have a ton of cellared beers that I can just never match. (Where am I going to get an 09 BCBS or something like that? I'm hesitant to trade because I don't know equal value and I'm not sure of the process)
    6. No one else ever brings anything over to their place.
    7. I can't afford the storage space to cellar beers

With all that being said I do what I can to repay them. I'll be the driver as often as I can. I have been following the releases forum and trying to get what I can. I picked up some Deschutes XXV for them when they were out of town and some Uncle Jacob's Stouts for them when they were busy at work.

I am still a mooch and feel guilty about it often.

If you don't have the money, then you don't have the money, no biggie. If people look down at you because you don't have the money then you should plant your middle finger in front of their face.

With that said, I do feel like a mooch in the "three way trades" I have been in with two other BA's. The boxes they send are always loaded, mine aren't as impressive. No one ever complains or makes a comment, and they both have engaged in the trades again with me, so they must be liking something. I just wish I had the dough to give them some really special stuff, as they seem like cool dudes.

A real friend won't care that you don't reciprocate in kind, particularly if there is an income difference. All anyone can ask is that you make an effort to do your share, within your means.

It's ok so long as you have a heart as big as a whale...

And to answer your question, I am not a moocher. I am generally the guy that buys and shares his beer. Making other people happy makes me happy. There's a difference between accepting a friend's hospitality and mooching. While none of my friends generally reciprocate, I in no way would consider them "moochers".

I don't know if that qualifies you as a mooch. The person in the other thread has great beer, but won't share and goes to tasting and drinks the beer others bring. That s a mooch. If you are new, don't have a cellar or whatever, that is ok by me. Bring some great food when you go to their house. If you see some cool beer glasses, buy one or two and bring them. You don't have to have wales. Contribute in other ways

As long as they keep inviting you over, you're obviously not doing anything wrong... :grinning:

I don't have a big cellar by any means, but I can HONESTLY say that it is way more fun to open a good bottle with at least one other person, if not more. I like hearing everyone's opinion on the beer and being able to share the wealth.

I feel like I've probably been a mooch at some events and others have mooched from me at others. All evens out.

Opposite. I'm the guy that buys to share. And my efforts have paid off because most of my friends now buy craft beer to bring to our parties, and thus the reciprocating cycle is set.

I'd like to think almost my entire tasting group is a bunch of beer moochers... such is what happens when you're in the presence of GrumpOldTroll. The dude is just a source of a never-ending stream of wales and he always wants to open everything with everyone! All I can really do is just count my blessings.

I wouldn't consider myself a mooch at all. The issue that I have is that I've never traded and I don't want to trade with others if I can hold up my own end of the deal. I've had numerous trades offered to me where they'll mention something I want and then I'll look at their wants and I won't have access to any of that stuff. What it boils down to is, I don't want to trade for 2 sixers of Zombie Dust and only be able to offer 3 four packs of Hoponius Union or something along those lines. I'm not saying that Hoponius Union is bad by any means, I just feel that I'd have to offer more. Maybe I'm just crazy.

No. I always bring my own and extra and I don't like to be in a position where I can't "pay my own way." My father once told me that if I have any self esteem at all & conduct myself in a manner that is upright, no one will ever know if I am rich or poor.

    This is truth.

If you feel bad about drinking all their good beer, next time bring some food over. Grill up some brats, burgers, steaks, or whatever for everyone. A lot of times, I meet people at other beer bars that let us bring our own stuff in. We always take care of the bar, and you can buy a round for everyone, or again food to share with everyone.

I am going to a gangbang BIF tasting this weekend. I was not involved at all in the trades, but there will be no food for the most part, so I put together an interesting meat and cheese plate from Houston Dairymaids. They have an amazing selection of cheeses from around the country that most people at the tasting have not had.

If I don't have something to bring to an event, I usually bring extra the next time.

There are mooches, but I generally believe it all comes out even in the end. Or if I am enabling a mooch or two I haven't really noticed, and don't mind much anyway.

    Nice and honest post.

I have been on both sides over the cousrse of my life. The broke friend and the not broke friend who is happy to share. Me and most of my beer geek friends love sharing good beers, that is a large part of what makes this such a fun hobby.

You stated you always try to bring something over and others do not. I am sure they notice that and appreciate that. And you offer to drive and picked up bottles.

Sounds like good friend to me.

The other thread, as I understood it, made it sound like the moocher had the goods to spare but wouldn't do it when it came time to pony up. I'm by no means bragging, but I make more money than most of my friends (still not a rich man by any means) and so usually if there's some expensive craft beer being drank, it's on my dime. My friends are not moochers because if they had the cash to spare it, they would.

So, by extension, you're not a moocher in my opinion. They invite you and you spare what you can when you can. Feel no guilt, your friendship and experiencing these beers with you is probably a lot more valuable to them than the cost of the bottles.

Locally I'm not a mooch because I'm always getting beers that aren't local. When I go to something like a KBS release party bottle share or DLD I really feel like a mooch. The KBS bottle share was insane.

We have a local mooch. Always trying to get himself invited to beer tastings and offers nothing. There was a local KBS tapping and I invited some friends over before hand to try Expedition Stout, Pt5, Founders RIS, BCBS, and one or two more I can't remember. This guy invites himself to my house and then, after we get our KBS, asks if I want to go in half on a bomber. I pretty much read him the riot act in front of 20 people. We just had a bottle share when a guy moved and I was adamant that that guy not get invited and he wasn't.

I would say the fact that you went and scored some Black Butte XXV means you are not a mooch.
