SHORT backstory: My contract with the military is about to end. When my closest friends have ETSed out, they have had a "victory" whatever... for one friend it was an expensive cigar, for another a bottle of tequila...

I am going to be out in a matter of weeks. I want a good victory beer that I can buy here, and for me that means I'm going to put down over $20 (likely) for the first time. I've heard of Hoppin' Frog a lot, and one of their bottles costs $24 at my local beer store. Worth it or no? Different suggestion?

    Thanks, everyone!

Hoppin Frog are usually around that price in MA. Their stouts are very good though. Which beer are you talking about?

Hoppin' Frog makes some great stuff, but it depends on what kind of beer you like. If you're a big Imperial Stout fan then BORIS, BA BORIS and DORIS are all great, but there are better ones out there too. If you haven't had anything from them I would definitely give them a try.

I know all the ones I looked at were between like $17-25. Can't remember the name of the most expensive one. They were all top shelf though and caught my eye as I have never tried anything from Hoppin' Frog.

My favorite styles are stouts (in general), porter (vanilla is my favorite, anything will do) and any of the "Belgian" styles (meaning dubbel, tripel, quad). I like pretty much anything... not huge on IPAs but I like a few. Only style I can't really appreciate is barley wine.

if its available i recommend barrel aged naked evil, which is a barrel aged barley wine or just their plain old barrel aged boris which is also very good.

For something like this, I might even go for something like The Bruery's Sour in the Rye. You want something memorable, and while Boris or BA Boris sure are great beers, they aren't exactly the type of beer that sticks out in my mind THAT much. Either that or I'd get a mix a 6 of some more expensive singles so you can have a little tasting event for yourself. I dk. Just throwing out some ideas. And congrats on your victory!

The only Hoppin' Frog beer I can think of that might be worth $25 would be DORIS the Destroyer. If you're into huge imperial stouts, that's an excellent one.

I live close to Hoppin Frog, so it really makes me sad when I hear Hoppin Frog bottles selling for that much. I would only pay for a Naked Evil at that price. BORIS is $9, BA BORIS is $14 and DORIS is $11 at the brewery. I believe Naked Evil was around $18-20 last year. Naked Evil is one of my favorites and the next batch isn't due until sometime next year. I hope those prices put things into perspective!

To answer your question, if it's BORIS or DORIS then yes, well worth it. Especially if you already like heavy stouts.
Is this celebration a rowdy shebang where you pass the bottle all around and everybody yells? (It probably should be I suppose, in light of the occasion). Because those are beers that benefit from pouring into a good glass and contemplating as it slowly warms in your hand.

Congratulations and thanks for what you've done.

I would get two bottles of Victory At Sea Vanilla Porter. Hoppin Frog is way overpriced, especially at the prices you quoted, for the quality. HF is quite good, few stouts are thicker or more strongly flavored, but Victory At Sea is in a class of its own for the price and taste (you said you like vanilla porters).

Edit: not sure where "here" is in your post, could be that HF stout is best you can get so yeah I would go for it, I love it more on a cold winter night, but always a kick in the head of strong stout flavor.

I'd buy BORIS and BA-BORIS and open/share them at the same time, this is a celebration, right? If you haven't had much experience with barrel aged stouts this comparison will be a shove down the rabbit hole. I love BA-BORIS and think it's one of the smoothest, tastiest, easiest drinking BA stouts out there. Enjoy!

Wow, as someone posted earlier those prices are almost double that here in MA. Don't think I've seen Naked Evil here though so I can't say for sure on that one. I really like the beers from them I've tried (various BORIS + DORIS and a seasonal or two) but I have a hard time justifying the price point and rarely buy them now. I keep hoping they come up with a distribution plan that cuts costs out of state (assuming that is the cause).

We buy BA BORIS or DORIS for ~$15 near the brewery, so $26 is overpriced. BUT...for a celebration, what's a couple extra bucks for a super tasty brew. Buy and enjoy, you will not be dissapointed! I would not spend that much on the rest of the Hoppin Frog line up though.

I am guessing you are at Bragg. Fayetteville doesn't seem to have many quality beer stores, but I looked a couple up from the "regional listings" page and 'Grapes and Hops' and 'Bob & Sheree's Shoppe' seem to get good reviews. Maybe try shopping around.

    HOOAH!!!

Hoppin Frog beers aren't worth that price point IMO. There are lots of beers that are just as good in the $10-14 range. Even BA Naked Evil, although pretty good, is more expensive and not as good as Sucuba for instance. Go with something else if you want a memorable experience.

What's more memorable than dropping $24 on a crap beer! HaHaHa! I am still pissed over that bottle of $18 Maple Bacon Voodoo Dounut; I should have known better. Joking aside, I loved BA BORIS, but totally agree that $24 is way overpriced. I would, however, pay it for a special occasion if there were no other options and I have a feeling that some mid-level mom and pop liqour store ain't carrying Firestone Walker.
