This is my second time heading out to Denver for the GABF but was looking for some advice from local BAs.

My buddy and I are flying in the friday morning of GABF and planning on heading to Avery then Fort Collins that day/night. I am looking for recommendations of a brewpub with decent beer/food before we stop at Avery. Obviously, since we are coming from the airport and heading towards Boulder, I am really looking for recommendations en route. Last Year we stopped at Mountain Sun before hand and loved the food and beer...so if that is the way to go, then please let me know.

    Thanks for you input.

Yak and Yeti in Arvada is a short detour off of 36 on the way to Boulder (if you like Indian brewpubs). In Boulder you can't beat the beer list at Backcountry Pizza. Don't forget about Louisville either; they are turning into their own little beer destination right now.

Fate brewing is new to Boulder, has great food and is a couple blocks from Avery. Also Bru is right there, the owner Ian is/was a chef and has amazing food.

You could take a somewhat back way and hit Oskar Blues on the way, then just take diagonal highway to Boulder.

Fate, Yak/Yeti, and Oskar Blues Liquids and Solids are great choices. Don't know anything about Bru, though.
With time being precious, Fate makes the most sense as it is about 4 blocks from Avery and is darn tasty.

Upslope Brewing has a shiny new facility right near Avery and always has a food truck out front, but definitely more of a beer must-stop than food. If they have it, get their Session Pale.

In Louisville (off 36 on the way to Boulder), there is Lucky Pie Pizza and Taphouse.

Thanks for the input guys, please keep it coming or +1 them. We did Oskar Blues last year and not looking to duplicate it again.

Hijacking your thread, but I'm trying to decide which days my boyfriend and I will be flying in. We're visiting a couple friends in Denver, so we'll probably be flying in earlier in the week and would love to explore the beer and food scene in Denver. Any recs?

Good choice to come earlier in the week. Events will start as early as Sunday including special beer releases, kickoff events, etc. You should wait a few weeks when events start getting posted. There will be so many, your head will spin.

Otherwise, search the Rocky Mountain forum, you'll find tons of recommendations for beer and food.

Keep your eye out for the Oskar Blues bus rides from Denver to Longmont to tour their brewery and hops and heiffers farm. I haven't been, but have heard it is amazing. It's an all-day thing.

Avery has food thats pretty good available from the catering bussiness across the road. But Yak and Yeti would be a great stop.

Yup...that was straight up hijacking. LOL

As an outsider (not a Colorado resident), I find that there is just as much fun bouncing around from brewery to brewery as the festival itself. If you guys are flying in earlier in the week, you may want to consider a trip to Boulder, Longmont, Loveland, Fort Collins.....or a day in the mountains....or a day down to Colorado Springs.

Last Year, we hit Mountain Sun, Avery, Oskar Blues, Left Hand, Grimm Brothers, Funkwerks in one day....then Wild Mountain, Renegade, Wynkoop, Breckenridge, and Great Divide in another day. Well worth it...

EDIT: My Top 3 of the area...
    Avery
    Great Divide
    Crooked Stave
    (3B) Funkwerks

You hit up Fort Collins and didn't stop by Odell? Any particular reason?

They closed at 6pm and we didn't get to Fort Collins until after 7pm....but fear not, my potential friday plans for this year is Dry Dock, Avery, Odell, New Belgium, Equinox, Funkwerks.

EDIT: Actually, the reason that we are hitting Odell is that my buddy (monkeymagic72) wants to go there. I figure it was the least I could do for my Bruery mule...LOL.

i say this in every thread, almost every year

come earlier in the week to allow for non-gabf activities. our beer scene is amazing, but if youve never seen the rocky mountains, goddamn dont skip an opportunity to get up into the high alpine.

i grew up hiking/biking/skiing the Appalachians dreaming of the rockies. if you romanticize the mountains like i do, grab a couple 6'ers of our great local canned selection and spend one day in awe under some of our high alpine peaks.

Food recs you might not get in a beer forum include Old Major (go early in the week), The Kitchen (the Boulder one is better if you end up that way), Il Posto (killer, killer New American-inspired Italian, if that makes any sense. Also a great Sun-Thu 5-6pm happy hour), Trillium, Torta Grill on Colfax, and the green chile at Cherry Cricket.

Though I've never been to GABF before (just moved here) and I suspect there won't be a lot of time to do non-beer-related things...

That is a ton of traveling for one day.

But you'll thank your buddy for making you go there as Odell, IMO, is the best stop in FC to quench your thirst. But I am biased, as they are my favorite brewery.
