Sorry if this has been covered in a previous thread, but if so I was unable to find it by searching.

    Here's the situation:
I made a trade with another BA member, and we both shipped last Monday 7/29/2013. I received my box on Wednesday, and his was reported as "delivered" as well on the same day. I texted him, and told him everything arrived in perfect condition and thanked him for the box. I thought he'd say the same, but he told me the box never arrived and FedEx incorrectly scanned it as delivered. We've both made calls to FedEx and put a trace on the package, but FedEx has not located it at all. They say that since it was "delivered" it was most likely stolen. They also said that it's very rare that it could have been delivered to the wrong address. I told the other member that I'd send him another box since I have one last bomber of the beer we made the trade for.

    Anyway, these are my questions:

    1) Should I have agreed to replace the beer/box? What are the general rules here? I think I trust the guy and believe him that the box was in fact never delivered, but it's hard not to second guess myself. The main reason I believe him is because his box had good, surprising extras included.

    2) Is it common for FedEx to deliver to the wrong address or for packages to get stolen after delivery (i.e. has this happened to many of you all)?

Thanks for any help or guidance

its up to him to provide a safe address for the box to arrive. packages get stolen all the time, and i've heard of people seeing the fedex guy drop it off only to find 2 minutes later that it's gone.

I've have FedEx deliver to the wrong address twice. Once was a different apartment in my building and the neighbor just dropped it off, once was a different house down the road.

It sucks that he never got the box but I agree with the person above that its up to him to provide a safe address. I completely understand the risks of packages getting stolen which is why I only provide addresses where I'm 100% certain someone will be there to receive it. On top of that FedEx is going to lose packages from time to time, its happened to me plenty of times but not yet with a beer mail (knocking on wood). As long as you made a good faith effort to get him the box you shouldn't feel obligate to replace it. Just gotta chalk up this unfortunate situation as a loss.

You did your part to deliver to the address provided. Unless it was specified that signature was required, I don't be believe it should be your responsibility to send another package. It's nice that he sent extras, but for you to have to double dip into your reserves sucks.

At the end of the day it's up to you, but since it was marked as delivered, you can never Be 100% certain of what happened. They could have taken the package and kept it. You never know...

If in doubt, request a hold for pick up at your local fed ex. That could've avoided this situation.

I had a non-beer related FedEx shipment get delivered to the wrong address and they were able to retrieve it and get it to me. I was home at the time and called within 10-15 minutes of receiving a delivery confirmation email though. I assume they record GPS coordinates for deliveries for liability reasons, but maybe not?

First off, Fedex and UPS both deliver to the wrong address all the time. Of course they won't say that to you, and in fact they don't even know about 90% of the mis-deliveries because a neighbor usually just drops it off. But it is common. That's the most likely scenario - check streets in town with similar names, a nearby street with the same house number, two numbers juxtaposed, etc, etc.

As for what you are responsible for - your responsibility pretty much ends when the tracking says "Delivered". (assuming you put the right address in)

After that, you can't possibly be responsible for a stolen package. If it is mis-delivered, it usually turns up eventually, but if not, some a-hole neighbor decided not to bother returning it to its rightful owner. That's the only scenario that is neither person's responsibility (mis-delivered, wasn't returned), but that seems to be an extreme minority case.

Now, depending on the trade, beers involved, person, etc - I'd probably figure something out. Maybe split the difference on the box, or just send them another box if I had plenty of extras of whatever I traded.

Work it out with the other party. Split the loss with beers that you can afford to let go of.

For future trades, ask them whether they would like to have a package delivered at their own risk or to have a signer. Or you could always deliver to their place of work. I personally have my wine shipped to my work address...

I had a box delivered 10 blocks off last week. The sender wrote the correct address on the slip, but whoever entered it into the computer and printed the barcode swapped two digits. Fortunately it had my phone number on the label and the person who got it gave me a call.

I always check shipping address on FedEx after I ship something out. Maybe asking the sender to send them a confirmation on delivery address...

I've had boxes delivered to my neighbor's house, and I've found boxes of origami supplies delivered to mine.

At work, we've had a 12' Kayak, Cases of Frozen Bread Dough, and countless other oddities that were meant for other companies in the industrial park, show up at our door.

I completely understand that this is a tough position to be in. I had a big box of beers stolen off of my front porch once. I didn't ask my trading partner to replace them as he had done what was expected of him and shipped a box that arrived safely. Not the best of situations, but it is what it is. He did send me some more beers anyway, which was greatly appreciated in that it took away some of the sting.

Since it said delivered and it could have possibly been stolen first I'd wait to see if it turns up. If it does not since getting it delivered is all you can be expected to do and its up the the receiver to ask for it to be held at the fed ex station if they are worried about it being stolen or worried if they have alot of misdeliveries I don't think your much on the hook if at all.

If the bottle you sent was not some crazy whale and I had extra I'd probably send another of just that single bottle that was part of the main trade. I feel the extras and additional bottles included in the trade would be rediculous to expect or hope for. If it was a rare bottle I think just giving him an awesome deal on another would be acceptable.

Stuff like that happens when trading. I just had a damanged shipment and I plan to replace all 120$ which makes my the bottles I traded for exrtrenemy expensive but when you trade you take the risk of having to lose a shipment... this applies to receiver in your situation sender in mine.

Lucky for me I live in an Apt and have everything delivered to the office, and the girls sign for my boxes. Tough one though, but if you shipped it right and it's gone that's not your fault. If it arrived all busted up because it wasn't packed securely that's on you. I don't think you would have to reship because you did things right, and I believe the boxes are insured automatically for $100.00 unless you assume more coverage. When you collect the insurance $ send him a nice box if you want.

Put in a request to be reimbursed through insurance. If you can replace the bottles with the money, do so, and perhaps requests he/she cover the cost of re-shipping, or if you plan to trade again, assume that karma will take care of itself. Just require a direct or indirect signature this time. I had an issue a while back with a lost package - luckily it all worked out in the end, but it's pretty stressful when you are just trying to do right by all parties.

I'd have him search nearby places. The most likely scenario is FedEx mis-delivered. I was sitting on the couch one day and watched my tracking turn to "Delivered" without the guy showing up. I called to ask and the driver insisted he delivered it to my door. The next day, a guy down the street came and dropped my box off.

This is why I always ask the person if they want me to check the signature required box when making the shipping label. If they say no and it's stolen, then it's on them.

I had 2 boxes delivered to me at the same time, one with hundreds of dollars of Kuhnhenn one offs, and one with a BADL and other difficult to replace bottles. Half an hour after they were marked as delivered, when someone got home to grab them, there was nothing there.

It is a super shitty situation, but I made a point of telling both shippers it's not their bad and they have no obligation to replace anything. Oh, and FedEx basically said the driver said he delivered them so tough shit.
