My girlfriend went to The Alchemist today, to pick up a couple of cases of Heady Topper for me. She's traveling for another week before coming home, so she asked if they had any room-temperature Heady she could purchase. She didn't want to buy it cold, let it get warm, only to chill it again before drinking. (Not that it matters necessarily, but we were thinking the less temperature fluctuations, the better.)

At any rate, the woman at Alchemist told her that they can it cold and store it cold, so there wasn't any room-temperature Heady for sale. My gf said that it was no problem, and asked to buy a couple cases regardless. The woman then added, "it MUST be kept cold at all times." My gf was like :astonished: and started to say that she wasn't sure that was going to be possible.. and the Alchemist woman interrupted her and repeated her stern warning. My gf's brother (who knows little to nothing about craft beer, and was already like :grimacing: over the cost of a case) asked for another/better explanation, and apparently another worker chimed in and said the same thing: Heady MUST be kept cold.

I can understand The Alchemist canning and storing Heady cold in order to keep it the absolute freshest it could possibly be, but I'm quite surprised that they would say that it must be kept cold (at all other times). This is even more surprising given John Kimmich's latest statement on Heady and freshness, etc.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm like

I thought it wasn't supposed to be "kept" at all, only consumed immediately.

I'll tell you all my thoughts but first toss me a can of heady

If there is any deviation in temperature all of that delicious placebo effect will fade.

I'd imagine that it can be stored in the same manner as other Double IPAs. It's the same thing, surely?

Though keeping it cold might be for the best, I ran into a situation earlier this summer where I grabbed a 4 pack and tossed them in my car. I forgot about them (somehow) for the entire day, with temperatures reaching well into the 90's. I put them in my fridge and drank them a few days later and surely wasn't disappointed. Maybe my pallet isn't quite as well tuned as others but I found little to no difference between these heady's and others I have had in the past and recently. I find the Cold to warm to cold thing with beer to be a bit of a misconception. Either way some Heady is better than none!

As far as I know the reason is because it isn't pasteurized. I picked up 2 cases on June 14, put them in a cooler while visiting relatives over the weekend and kept fresh ice in the cooler at all times, got it home and put it into the fridge immediately. Still have some left and it tastes great.

Serious answer: I believe they do tell people this to dissuade those who would be dissuaded from buying too much, which means more for the beer enthusiasts and BA's. They definitely have no problem selling out all the time. I'm very skeptical that anyone would be able to tell the difference between a can that had been kept at room temp for a week vs. one that had been kept cold the whole time.

The things that warm temperatures can do to hoppy, canned, unpasteurized, fresh-drinking beers are less than flattering.

I'm pretty sure the Heady I traded for wasn't kept cold by FedEx while in transit, and it was still pretty damn delicious .

if that's what the brewery says, fine. It's their beer until you buy it; they can say what they want.

on a side note, I'd tell the girlfriend not to worry about cold -> warm -> cold vs warm -> warm -> cold.

(I always wonder where that thought process came from, though not enough to do my own research when we have such a great resident historian. :grinning: )

Very little if any craft beer is pasteurized.

Wormtown insists on this as well. I was under the impression that no craft beers are pasteurized though but may be wrong. I got two cases of Heady in January and didnt keep them cold...no issues.

You'd be in for a surprise. I've had too many Surly cans that had been kept in a friend's trunk / kitchen table / backpack for a week or two... absolutely obliterates the flavor profile of the beer.

when i went i got a case, i put it in the trunk and left it there over night. packed up the next day and went all the way back to jersey unloaded it and it was perfectly fine. beer can handle extreme temperatures i wouldn't worry about it. as long as its not sitting in the sun then yeah nothing to worry about. besides people trade heady all the time, if you send something out ground shipping its usually a week and its definitely not cold the entire time so just think of it that way

I got a few cans of heady recently that were chunky, and not in a good "look at all those delicious hops" kind of way. I talked to someone at the brewery and her answer was that the temperature fluctuation had caused the very gross chunks (looks like yeast rafts in a homebrew). I didn't really buy the explanation for a lot of reasons but I would bet they are instructing their employees to tell customers to keep the cans cold to avoid this. Personally I think it's a QC problem with the canning line, but hey what do I know.

If you can't sign the "I will keep it cold at ALL TIMES" waiver/"Heady pledge," they won't let you buy it. They put a tracking thermometer on the cans, and will black list you from future purchases. It's like the opposite of those silly blue mountains on the Coors bottles (warning! if the mountains aren't blue, you might be able to taste how bad this beer is...)

And BTW, how do all the trades occur with Heady? Refrigerated Shipper?

Seriously, HopSlam has the same warning on the cases. You will be fine if it "warms up for a while." It's beer.
