Alright folks, this weekend includes brewing my 98th and 99th batches, so the big 100 is coming up fast. I usually brew 10 gallon batches with hiphopj5, but we have a set schedule to turn around beers by a certain time (parties and such). [The problem there is that it's not his 100th anytime soon, so we technically already have my 100th batch scheduled as another 10 gallon batch in the rotation.]

I want to do something special for the centennial batch, so I will probably do a 5 gallon batch on my own before the next time we brew (after this weekend) so that it's not just another recipe we brew regularly. I want to hear what you made for your 100th batch (or any other important milestone in your home brewing career). Also, any suggestions are welcome.

Obviously, something using all Centennial hops would be appropriate, but we just brewed an IPA with all Cents, so I kind of want to do something different. BUT Centennials are my favorite, so maybe an all-Cent double-IPA? Hmm...

EDIT: as far as suggestions go, I'm open to anything. I can lager, decoct, sour, really any style besides a stein beer is fair game.

An all-Centennial stein beer? But seriously, I'd do something big that I could hold onto until batch 200... an all Centennial barleywine or old ale sounds interesting, especially if you soured part of it or dosed some with Brett at bottling to see what happens over time.

This sounds tasty. Something along the lines of Bigfoot ale, but cents for hops. I really like bigfoot in that it's almost IPA-ish when it's fresh from all the hops, but also ages nicely. How long was it from 0-100, and what's your projected schedule for 200?

Do a JW Lees esque barleywine. 100% Centennial hops (instead of EKG) and 100% Malt of your choice (Marris Otter is theres), bitter to ~150 Theoretical IBUs, 4 hour boil, Pitch yeast of your choice. It'll easily last you till batch 200, if you don't drink it all.

A ginormous smash barleywine? Maybe I'll make one for my 50th batch. My 100th batch is a ways off, but 50 is just over the horizon. Then, at 100, I'll double the recipe. :grimacing:

Started in summer 2008. First year, only brewed maybe 5 or 6 batches, and really ramped up once I started brewing all-grain.

200? Well, that depends on a few things. If we keep the pace we've been doing, maybe another 3 yeas or so?

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

I am getting ready for number 50. I am going to do a chocolate, cayenne pepper, cherry imperial stout. It sound crazy but Black Fox brewing used to make one and it is incredible.

Doing a barley wine would be cool but everyone can make a barley wine. You should do something unique and out of the box. Maybe a sour IPA like Trinity Brewing?

100th / Centennial Hops is a great tie in for sure!

For my 50th batch I looked to 50th wedding anniversarys (gold) and decided to do a Belgian Strong Golden Ale and bottle it in corked & caged Belgian 750ml bottles. Definitely was a nice way to "class up" the milestone beer.

Double the volume or just the ingredients? Please say just the ingredients...

Red Swingline makes me happy to live in CO. That would make a great beer, especially if you can pull of the sour mash and maintain your mash at 100 for a couple days.

lots of great ideas here. I'm doing #198 and #199 this weekend; may have to steal one of these ideas in a couple weeks!

Thinking about it, I'm surprised you haven't brewed one yet, smash-master.

Whatever you decide, an OG of 1.100 would work. I did an all day b-day brew last week on a wild quad. Cereal mash, double decoction, 1.100 OG. Only my 59th batch, but I've still got almost 2 weeks til my one year brewniversary, so I should be at 62 batches or so my first year. Since I slow down throught the summer, that should put my 100th batch sometime around New Years. :grinning: My wife is a saint.

Ah yes, the giant smash barleywine. I just haven't gotten around to it yet! I think I will brew one soon tho. I'd like to get a powerful 5 gallon batch going for extended secondary during the cooler months, where it won't hog up one of my two freezer/controller units. I know optimally that will make it ready to drink in the summer, which is about bass-akwards from optimal, but I don't want to hog up freezer space that could be used to make beers with faster turn around times.

However, for a smash barleywine, I'm thinking maris otter is the way to go. Hops on the other hand...? It needs to be a lot tho, with plenty of moar. :sunglasses:

Marris, Golden Promise, Optic or Pearl would be cool English malts to do, but Marris is the traditional. I used 15 oz of EKG for a 10 gallon batch to hit 60 IBU (FWH & 10 min addition, not counting 3 oz hop back), so you're looking at about a pound for 5 gallons if you want to go ~100 IBU, moar hop territory.

Celebration clone? A Centennial SmasH sounds good also. Or perhaps a beer with the exact OG of 1.100?

Due to lax record keeping early on and the large number of brews done with other folks along the way I don't know how many brews I have made, certainly more than 100. Wish I did know so I could celebrate number 200 with a special brew the way you are doing. Congratulations!

Ooo, a pound of hops and a butt-load of maris otter, smash me up for that! :sunglasses:.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I'd like to say this forum has been truly instrumental in my brewing expeditions (oh dear me, I'm getting a little sentimental here).

I have a couple ideas floating around in my head, bit of a mish mash of some of the ideas thrown around here. I really want to have fun with this batch, so I have a feeling I'm going to be tweaking right up until I mash in (and probably after fermentation is done, too  ). I'll report back when I've made it.

    Thanks again!
