I'm going to be up in Cincinnati next month from Florida and want to set up an in-person trade or two with a couple of beers I can fit into my luggage. Which forum is most appropriate for this, the ISO FT, or the Great Lakes regional forum since it's area specific and in person?
ISO:FT. I usually don't give extras for local IP trades unless I have out of market beers to share. In your case, extras would be great (and a potential pleasant surprise!)
Strictly speaking there are no trades allowed in the regional forums, though sometimes they're slack about it. And you can sneak it in if you're all "Hey guys what are the best bars in [insert place here], oh and WHO WANTS TO IP TRADE????" I've had pretty fine luck with ISO:FT, but you'll probably want to post a few times. Also, as bad_trader said, pants optional.
i started giving commercial ip trade extras a bit ago but i've pretty much always given homebrew even before that. extras in ip trades (imo) are true extras unlike shipping extras where unless agreed in advance they're implicitly required. typical commercial extras in ip trades usually aren't whales or anything like that, usually just an out of market shelf beer relative to where i'm doing the trade.
I treat pants like an extra; not required, but societal norms say to have them. You also cannot be upset if your trading partner is not wearing them, but they should let you know in advance.
I have only had one IP trade and while I have a decent cellar as far extras goes I was trading TG stouts and I could tell this guy had a deep cellar. I mean it would have been like offering Howard Hughes a screwdriver.
For in person trades, I prefer to stay in the car and just hand oily, wrinkled bags out the window to each other. Seems the safest way. I'd recommend you post up something in the regional forum, maybe asking for some advice on best places to go near where you'll be, and mention you'd be up for some trading if anyone is interested. BM's will follow.
Local ip I probably wouldn't do xtras , given your driving out of area I'd bring some local good stuff, and try to add stuff never traded for and completely new .
When I do IP trades, I blow up my traders' trunks. The best part is watching sparks fly as they roll away.
"I swear I'm here to do an IP trade with her father!" "Why are your pants off?" "It's what us beer drinkers do. We go into our cellars, drop our pants, and look at our beers." I'm not the only one who does that, right?
