. . .Is it still the beer to compare other ipa/dipa's to?

for me, when i first had the elder it was "the" beer to go to. seek and enjoy. since 2007 there has been a sh!te load of ipa's and dipa's to compare. some good and some not so. it is still in my top ten. . . .er. . .six. i still enjoy the elder but i will not seek for it as to others out there these days.

Still my favorite, though I don't really know why you need to seek opinions about this, either it's your go-to or it's not.

agree. but with the limited amount these days and the more ba'ers seeking the elder and other ipa's out there thats just as good if not better. is it still? my taste buds has changed over the years and I've gone to seeking ABC and KRBC more in the last two years than the elder. when I first encountered "citra" dipa before KRBC released it I thought it was the go to "beer." but it wasn't even released then. it was the first time i heard of citra hops. i've had heady topper, hopslam, zombie dust(imp pale ale) and other hard to get here in the west coast. all great, but the elder is still better. but I find a few others here in the west coast a bit better. but i still compare all the ipa's and dipa's to the "Elder." Enjoy By series has been a hit since it's intial release. Not saying it's better than the Elder. . . . . . . . .

The "competition" is much stiffer than 5 years ago, but PtE/PtY are still my favorites. I don't drink elder as frequently since I moved from Santa Rosa, with so many great SD IPA options, but every once in a while I grab one and am reminded how well it stacks up. I'll say Alpine (maybe Societe too) make it more of a debate than it used to be for me, though.

I've had pretty much every touted IPA out there, and Elder is still my favorite. My guess from this post is that you're the same way.

What you recommend to nice looking young ladies when they're staring cluelessly at a taplist. Duh.

I can still get the Elder here in LA/OC when it's available if I want it. Maybe not every week. But when it's announced that it just came in at a liquor store and I get there and it's already gone (sold out) I'm not mad or upset. It's like "oh well." Or sometimes I just won't even try because I already know it's going to be gone. It's still one of my favorites if not "the" favorite. But "going" out of my way to buy it versus if it's there and I know can get a bottle or two then great. But it's not worth driving from point A to B to C to D to get one or two bottles anymore. I recently flew up to San Fran for a pub crawl and I had the Elder at Toronado that was one day old (and I've had the Elder at RRBC the morning it was tapped-during the Younger release) and it was the best tasting Elder I ever had. I can get fresh Elder at Beachwood BBQ almost any day of the week and it's still good. So "yes" I still compare all the ipa's & dipa's to the elder. It's still worthy after all these years. At least for me.

Blind Pig is better than Elder.

Elder is my favorite beer, but there's so many options I almost never actually order it.

Elder was my first GREAT IPA. Like a first love it will always have a special place in my heart, but their are PLENTY of GREAT IPA's in CA and throughout the country now.

Except I've replaced homer with homer and would nominate Societe's Pupil/Roustabout as the standard by which IPAs/DIPAs should be judged.....

Really though, there are so many choices now that not only stand up to, but dethrone PtE and BP.

Pliny is a world class IIPA, anyone who says otherwise is a homer

    Nothing beats Pliny on tap.

Except a fresh can of Heady.

As do 90% of the threads in the Beer Talk forum.

But really, what beer would you choose if you could only drink one beer for the rest of your life?

    The curiosity is killing me.

I am still quite happy to find PtE that's bottled w/in 2 weeks prior. It's SOLID. Even when I had easy access to KRBC, I still wanted Pliny from time to time. Would love to try the Societe stuff, and more of the Alpine offering as well. Is Pliny the target at present, no, but it's still solidly in the top tier. YMMV.

The Pliny at Toronado right now is magical. We call it the Fetus. I think there's extra amarillo. It's unicorn's tears.

There's no way Pliny stacks up to just about anything coming out of Beachwood.
