So I am a big fan of ales. Pale ales in particular. I drink everything craft, however, despite the style of beer. It took me 3 years to get my palate to appreciate IPAs. I couldn't handle the bitterness, but now I love IPA's. Having a Founders Centennial now and it is one of my favs. I am not fond of porters and stouts. My palate just doesn't agree with them. Being a lover of beer, will I eventually come to appreciate and love them like I did the IPA's?

What is it about them that you don't like? With IPAs, you said that you just didn't appreciate the bitterness. Is there some specific taste or texture in stouts and porters that turns you off?

You didn't like IPAs before, you don't like porters/stouts? What the heck did you drink for the last 3 years?

(I know, I know, there are sours, Belgian styles, lagers, ambers/browns, etc. but it seems like the most popular stuff on this site have been IPAs and stouts)

To seriously answer your question: it should come with time I think. I was confused when I drank Founders Breakfast Stout for the first time, but trying all kinds of different stouts over time let me really appreciate the amount of flavour and mouthfeel in these beers. So now I prefer these to IPAs which I started craft beer on, oddly enough.

They just don't go down well. The flavors, for the most part, I like. However, they just don't do it for me as a refreshing beverage. It's a struggle.

It's like cigarettes. You just keep working at it until one day you can't do without.

I dont remember how long it took for my palate to like IPAS but it sure wasnt as long as a year. Months I guess.

I started with ruination as one of the first beers I ever rated. I had tried a bunch of things before that but there was no getting ready for that. I loved it and was immediately hooked on the ipa. You will find that your tastes develop if you just go with your instincts when you buy. Try everything but if you find yourself really liking "this"and not "that", then buy that way. It's your palate you might as well enjoy what you are going to have.

Just like the ipas it takes practice. Keep forcing down the stouts and eventually you will like them. On a cold winter day nothing beats a nice imperial stout. Wait your in Florida. Just turn on the AC really high and put on a sweat shirt before you drink one:wink:

I hear ya, Pete. Try as I might (and...I keep trying, over and over, bc my gf's favorites are porters/stouts) I just can't get into them, or, rather, appreciate them like most seem to. IPA's, hoppy reds, sours, and saisons still reign supreme for me.

I think his name is Bob. I know his username is "peteboiler" so I can see the confusion. Maybe he boiled Pete?

Drink what you like and try something different occasionally, but don't feel like you have to choke something down to please someone/expand your palate, IMHO.

Dear OP: If somebody here actually had the audacity to reply by saying you simply will never like them, would you actually believe that the person could know such a thing for a fact?

I discovered stouts and loved them in the same session. Cant say that I have the perserverance to "try" to like something. I have developed a liking for beers that I never used to appreciate though but it happened sort of organically. Happy Drinking my friend!

might sound silly BUT honestly your palate can develop in other ways...rather than just trying various styles of beer.

example: i've been a coffee drinker for a lonnnnnng time i love the wide variety of different roasts and what not. also if you ever had a sweet tooth yeah chocolate is good, wait you mean they make huge stouts and porters that have these flavors????? yes count me in, i was in love with heavy beers from the get go. honestly it all depends on what you're used to but your taste can mature and you might find yourself enjoying something you thought you never would.

just remember to be open minded when trying a different style, if you try a stout or porter you're not so found of i wouldn't write them off write away. you might have tried a beer that sat in that particular style that you just weren't into.

Unfortunately you may be cursed with the dreaded TAS2R38 gene. It's a bitter taste receptor that some people have making things bitter almost unbearable to ingest. Do you think broccoli is too bitter? If so you may never like IPA's no matter how many you drink, sorry.

Yeah, tell me about it. I am replacing cigarettes with stouts. Not one smoke all week and I just started drinking and enjoying stouts last week.

There's a good point here. If you don't like porters or stouts but maybe like some aspects - find one that has those qualities. For this chocolate example, if you like chocolate, try Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout. Tons of chocolate flavor and it also happens to be delicious.

I used to hate IPA's and really hoppy beers. When I started out I loved Stouts and Porters, but my palate changed over time and now I love IPA's and consider myself a hop head. Recently I am trying to get more into barrel aged beers and sours. Overtime, I think the palate changes. Drink what fits you and don't forget to try new brews.

    Cheers !!
