Trust what others have said and see if you an develop your love with some stouts that are flavored with things you enjoy. Unlike a recently produced IPA, most stouts and porters showcase well the flavors that are meant to be there... Also you may be let down by the fact that they "don't go down well" because of your expectations based on other styles. While some may see a stout as refreshing, they are usually not crisp, light and refreshing in the traditional pale ale way. I still have a hard time picking a porter over an IPA on a hot day, but they are most certainly delicious!!

    Keep trying.

    Cheers.

    Bob,

Do you enjoy coffee? I liken the flavor of roasted malts in porters and stouts somewhat to coffee, which is why I ask. If you don't like coffee, then it's possible that porters and stouts just may not appeal to you at first. And possibly ever. Which is just fine. Remember, it's your palate and you need to drink what you enjoy. Don't try to hard to force yourself to like anything. Just take it slow and maybe it will come around.

    Easy Way to fix this.
For 2 weeks drink nothing but Coors light' Bud Lime and Michelob.
After torturing yourself for 2 weeks, open up a Founders Porter or a Bells Expedition Stout.
Compared to the crap you were drinking, this will taste like the greatest beer ever.
From that point on, you will love stouts and porters.

    Thank me later.

Bob, I have been doing this for a looong time. I've been brewing since 1999 and was drinking craft beer before that.

In my time, I have gone through phases. I am in a hophead phase right now. I just came out of a Belgian phase. Belgians and hoppy beers appear most often in my phases, but I do get dark beer phases and lager phases and sour phases and even fruit phases.

I don't know if this will happen to you. But I have to say, I hope it does. You've bought the ticket. Now take the ride and see where it goes...

It took me a while to actually be able to enjoy a porter or stout. I love the hell out of coffee, drink it every day. Something about the roasted flavors and dark malts that was still a turn off for me. I ended up liking them after trying milk stouts. LH Milk Stout and ST 2X stout were the 2 that got me started. Find something you can tolerate and ease yourself in. If that doesn't work don't worry about it, there is no law stating that you must enjoy stouts.

    Bob,
I see you mention that they don't do it for you as "a refreshing beverage". I realize that everyone drinks for their own reasons and that is how it should be and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. It is your right and choice. But I think that if you are limiting yourself to beers that are "refreshing", you are going to be missing out on a huge quantity of delicious styles of beer...both ale and lager. So if it is refreshment you are in to, maybe try some Kolsch's, Berliners, Saisons or Fruit Lambics. OR...grab a big, thick, chewy imperial stout and a glass of ice water:slight_smile: Cheers buddy and good luck.

Drink what you like and keep an open mind to trying new ones, and then just let your preferences develop as it does. Don't force it one way or another.

Ditto for me on IPAs. Ruination equalled revelation.

I didn't have the same thing with stouts. The flavors did it for me right away. You said you don't find them refreshing...I am thinking they aren't supposed to be? For me, sitting and just sipping on a big stout and really getting into the flavors is what they are about. Refreshment...not so much.

Pssst...by the way...you also are under no contractual obligation to enjoy stouts...lots of styles out there and your beer drinking card won't get revoked if porters and stouts are not your favorites. Keep an open mind, of course, but don't get hung up on "needing" to like stouts. It will happen or it won't.

Pro tip: if you don't like it, don't drink it. Never try to convince yourself that you like a beer just because you think you should.

I originally gravitated towards IPA's and all that juicy hop flavor. It did take me a bit to get my palate to appreciate it's malty counterparts. I remember having my first oatmeal stout which I managed to choke down. Now, they're one of my favorite styles. I love the roasty, coffee and dark flavors of Stouts/porters.

I worked at Subway for 3 years when I was in high school, and ate it nearly every day. When I first started there were a few sandwiches like the seafood sensation, and tuna that I wanted no part of. After I became sick of every other sub one by one, these became my favorite until eventually I was sick of those too. With beer I have gotten into, sick of, and back into every style over and over again. This is how I am with most things in life though, not just food and drink.

Good for you. Once you are really far from that habit you will find that those stouts are intensely delicious. I quit smoking myself almost 5 years ago so I know.

I disagree with this. I hated, I mean hated hoppy beers when I first got into beer. Fast forward to now I crave the damn things.

Your palate can sometimes be dumb and need some smacking around to come to its senses.

I think it's the coffee flavor in most stouts/porters that really throws me.. Probably because I despise coffee. I just have to take some time to find some non-coffee offerings and try them.

Try Left Hand Brewing Company's Nitro Milk Stout. It's the beer that got me into stouts, even though I'm a hophead at heart.
