Read the label or: why I feel like an idiot

This might start sounding like a "humblebrag," but believe me...it doesn't end that way.

Yesterday, I moved back to my home city after having been out of state for a few years. The day before the move, my favorite store here had posted that they received a surprise shipment of Enjoy By 9.13.13. AWESOME! Except, of course, I wouldn't be home for another 30 hours or so.

Today, I'm asked if I want to head out that way on a beer run. I'm tempted to say no, due to budget constraints, but I figure what the heck...I can put off unpacking for a little longer if I head out. So I stop in to the store, and there it is...Enjoy By 9.13.13. YES! I see that there's one bottle behind it, and after glancing to make sure it's not an Arrogant Bastard or something, I see the words Enjoy By and snatch it up.

Holding both bottles in one hand as I go to put them in the fridge, I notice that they've used two different bottle caps. "Funny," I think to myself. "One batch, one bottling line, two different caps. Weird."

Then I realize my mistake...the giant "04.01.13" printed on the label.

Not only was someone stupid enough to NOT buy this when it was fresh, but I was stupid enough to actually purchase it at full price in late August.

Moral of the story: don't make assumptions. And read the not-so-fine print on your purchases.

p.s. I can't help but wonder what Stone would think if I reported this via their expired beer finder.

Or you can try to get your money refunded. I used to work at a liquor store that would give you a refund on that, so I would say it's worth a try.

Bet it still tastes good. It's not like its toilet water now.

I actually did the exact same thing when 7.04.13 came out, saw a bunch of enjoy bys on the shelf and grabbed 4 of them. got home and...april fools! 4.01.13. Still tasted great though.

Doesn't Stone use like 3 or 4 different caps? I would assume they just dump bags of various ones into the feeder and you get what cap you get. I wouldn't assume a different cap would mean different batch but the silk screened label certainly should have given it away. Bummer regardless but it might be fun to do a side by side and see how true it is that you need to enjoy by. If you do, let us know how much it has fallen off. Cheers.

Sure. It would be interesting for a side by side.

I'm pretty sure that Stone uses three or so different bottlecaps for each run no matter what. Right?

I bet it is still a very tasty brew. Do a side by side for shits and giggles.

I've had a few 45 days out from the EB date, and they still taste amazing. If I had it, I'd shrug and drink it anyway. In a way, you're lucky to have it. ^^

To make you feel like less of an idiot: I've often found different caps on bottles from the same batch of Stone beer.

They should all be the same color (gold). But they have about 8 different quotes/pictures/reviews that go on the caps.

Unfortunately, Stone has bigger issues to get through today than an expired beer.

This irks me. Folks complaining about old Enjoy By when I can't find any at all...I'd happily take one from April over none at all. One store near my house is listed on Stone's Enjoy By page, but I called the store, and they never got it in. Plus, even if they get the next one, I'm away at school now, with no good beer stores within hours.

I second this. I really enjoy Stone's offerings and would love to try an "Enjoy by".
