.. what? I have no idea what you mean. I said

"balanced" means "balanced": neither flavour having a particular dominance. If all you can taste is hops or malt, by definition it is not "balanced".

you selectively quoted in a way that is nonsensical.

    I would put it at a 9.96837465889 / 10.01998643, personally :grinning:

    Great analogy.

And I was going to mention DFH 90 minute as an example of a "balanced" DIPA.

Well, I wouldn't go that far; I take it as a relative term, as suggested here:

    Me, too...

I occasionally have a DFH 60 with lunch, since they have it at BWW (B-Dubs). 90 minute is more of a sip and enjoy at home beer.

Speaking of, man, this one is pretty damn hoppy, but even maltier than I remember. Almost feel like I'm drinking a barleywine.

Within the context of the IPA style, I think a balanced beer is one where neither the hops or malts dominate the flavor profile. I do not know how you could characterize 50/50 for an IPA. Below are IPAs which are balanced for my palate:

    · Victory HopDevil

    · Southampton Burton IPA

    · Sam Adams Latitude 48

    · Deschutes Inversion IPA

    · Deschutes Fresh Squeezed

    Cheers!

If malt gets any where near my beer it has become unbalanced and must be thrown into the sarlacc kitchen sink to be digested for a thousand years.

But surely your thick head can understand context, and how context shades descriptors accordingly....actually you probably can't. Never mind.

Before I read this obsessive thread I would have used the word "balanced" to describe some DIPA's but will no longer. I shall now say to the strongest flavored DIPA's that are my favorites, "It was a good fight, with the hops standing the Victor in the end".

Yep. Had the 60 with lunch today, and the 90 afterward :grinning:.
I see you've had the 120 as well - now that, to me, is a barleywine-esque brew! (The 90 is my fave of the 3, but I happen to be equally fond of the 75 Minute, although its a slightly different animal, what with the additional of maple syrup and all).

    Cheers!

Balance only exists within the context of the subject matter.

Bicycles, cars, trains, planes and and space shuttles are all vehicles of sorts, and they can all be fast. The bicycle will always be slow when compared to the train but that does not mean the bicycle is not fast in its own right. When I talk about fast bicycles, cars or trains it is automatically assumed that I am speaking in the context of the specific vehicle. I am often surprised that people cannot apply this simple logic to beer. It would be just as ridiculous to use the term balance to compare an IPA to a Dortmunder as it would be to use the term fast when comparing a bicycle to a train.

Balance is an appropriate term to describe any style, one just needs to understand proper context.

Hoptimum is balance, someone said. Now, I know that is definitely not right.

Yes, the 120 is very close to a barleywine; I haven't tried a vert on them, but I know people do. I'm not fortunately enough to have tried 75 yet.

I've always found the term 'balanced' to be arbitrary or meaningless when it comes to beer. Stating that a sensory experience had many elements in some kind of balance is trite at best.

Not true! When I was commuting by bike in Boston I used to outrun the train on the reg. Ok...so it was a trolly that wasn't nearly as agile as I was at navigating gridlock and rolling through red lights (cautiously). But I totally outpaced it.

But I liked your analogy, which I deleted from the quote for the sake of my own aggrandizement. It really is all about the context. And I would echo what other's have said about tasting malts in IPAs, etc for balance. But I'm not going to because I need to get back to watching Weeds on Netflix before I go to bed.

Sounds like you might be incapable of conceptualizing balance within any context. Not just beer
