I'm mainly referring to "hard-to-get" beers. My most recent experience was with TW and their 1 bottle limit on The Oracle. I was wondering where people stand on this because I think there are valid points on both sides of the argument; however, I'm not driving over an hour for 1 twelve oz. bottle either...

    Depends.

Is there only 1 case for an area with half a million people?

Is TW doing it to keep some of it there as long as possible and continue to draw people in by saying they have it?

How far you're willing to drive is your deal. Those decisions are pretty easy for me because any decent store more than 30 minutes away from me is at least 4.5 hours away from me.

I think every release should always be about 3. 1 to age, 1 to drink and 1 to trade...meh

This would be much more reasonable than 1

The idea is that if the same few people always buy out the best beers and don't shop the rest of the store then the store has not got a substantially large enough customer base to support it's other stock. So I think limits are ok. The size of the bottle doesn't matter so 12oz or bomber the same concept applies. I think 2 or 3 is good in general. The bottle shop is never going to be able to match wegman's for prices on a lot of things and will always be the "other choice" unless they can offer the incentive to come in for special releases to the greatest number of people.

Yes, where I live I wouldnt even come close to getting certain beers without a limit. Even still, it's very hard to get stuff like KBS around here.

Agree. 2 or 3. My taste buds are funny like that. Didn't like Sucks when I first tried it, then after the 2nd and 3rd beer, I was in heaven. Glad I bought a 12 pk. Man...

Our obsession with "rare beer" is what lead to bottle limits.

I often pass and grab a superior beer off the shelf.

Two is fine. One to enjoy now and one to age, depending on what brew it is.

I believe in a certain "beer store etiquette"

I become very upset when I miss out on something because some guy had to buy an unnecessary amount of it. I know bottle shops that don't have limits and I just don't shop there. Nothing like rushing to a distributor like that for BCBCS and you hear "We sold out, last guy in here bought five"....

My favorite distributor usually has a one bottle limit and I'm cool with it. It makes it fair for everybody.

I also like the 2 limit, I never trust my judgement after just one 12 oz beer, have had a couple where I swore it was the best thing I ever tasted only to have the 2nd one and think "wait that was just emotion, this is just a good beer"

I'm fine with limits in general (even just 2-3 bottle limit)- I just find a 1 bottle limit a bit extreme

I'm fine with a 1 bottle limit when necessary. For example, many stores in Boston got shut out of KBS when it came out and those that had it only got 1 case. It wouldn't really make sense to sell 4 packs of it

No, because I almost always buy beer with the intention of drinking it with someone else

If the store is doing it to make a bigger profit then no. Otherwise I am fine with it. I got one bottle of Oracle at TW that probably would not of been there if they were selling it in six packs.

3 bottles is an ideal amount for all intents and purposes. You will get to sample a bottle, age (if you like), or trade (if you like). Any allotment above that is asking for people to horde bottles. With a 1 bottle limit I would say it matters on what type of beer. Places that tell you to age their bottles, then this makes no sense. How can I age a bottle if I never knew what it tasted like to begin with. For a specialty fresh-hop, IPA, or other non-aging beer I could see a 1 bottle limit making more sense as they want the beer to be enjoyed sooner rather than later. Lots of variables and all breweries have their own ideas around their release parties.

TW often only gets 1 case of very rare beer so I can understand the 1 bottle limit. Though if they get a couple of cases then thats not cool

I think non ageing bottles like IPAs still should be 2 bottle limit. 1 bottle is insane. A lot of people will drink a bottle and think its just ok or not good until they taste it again for the first time.

One to trade? Really? Someone can't get a beer at the local shop because you want one you won't even drink? Two makes sense to me. One to try now and one to drink later. Although if the beer is extremely limited, one is okay. Yesterday a local bottle shop got one case of Mango Magnifico and limited it to one bottle. That seems fair to me.

They sell beer, I buy beer. If they have a limit, it's up to them. That's their business. If they don't and I buy 6-10 bottles, I don't feel the least bit guilty.
