I live in Mass, so cannot get this beer here. However, my wife is staying at the Mark Spencer Hotel in Portland for work. Can anyone suggest a place local to that hotel that would carry Pliny bottles? Thanks, Jeff
Pretty sure you just missed out. Portland got some Pliny this weekend- it was at Belmont Station and the Beermongers. Almost certain Belmont is out (if that was indeed the last bottle that I grabbed for a friend who had never had it) and pretty sure it wouldn't last long at the Beermongers either. Perhaps give them a call?
Wherever the bottles land, they are gone within a day or two. Jeff, you are in the High Expectation Zone. Dumb luck, timing and fortuity all play a role in anyone's ability to secure a Pliny in a bottle in PDX. On the other hand, draft Pliny is more readily available, but only for consumption on premises. Perhaps Mrs. Jeff can enjoy a pint and regale you with its attributes afterward....
Often times the Apex will have bottles of PtE, when other places in town are out. The reason for this is well known (very high prices for take out). However, if you really, really want your wife to bring a couple bottles back to Mass., you might give them a try. Definitely have her call over there first to be sure they still have some available.
Oh come now MADhomebrewer. The good folks at Apex would never allow someone to buy PtE without first discussing with them when the beer was bottled (and the implications of buying old pliny). Good customer service is a hallmark of that establishment.
John's Marketplace in SW Portland might have a few bottles left. Great price point as well. If you want a bottle downtown PDX, Higgin's serves bottles (but not sure if you can take off premises. Call ahead?)
Wasn't gonna be annoying and ask this, but hey, are there any places that get it on draft more often than others?
My recollection is that you can (buy bottles to go from Higgins). My recollection is also that this would be the last place the OP should go to obtian bottles of PtE. Last time I was there, the bottles of pliny they had available were almost a year old. Just to make sure we're all clear on this, PtE does not get better with age.
John's only sells PtE from the cash register check out area and when those two boxes are gone, they are gone. Within a day or two at most. And they have a one bottle limit, which does not slow the elimination of the stock much. So, in that limited respect, PtE can be considered fresh stock at John's - which I can't say about the rest of their inventory....
Belmont Station, Johns' Marketplace, Beermongers' are all good suggestions if you plan on her shipping the beers' home, as I DOUBT she'll be able to get them through PDX airport. However, she could always stroll down to the Horse Brass Pub where they have it on tap quite often and have Hugh or one of the guys pour her a pint.
This is true. Also, as they've taken the precaution of charging the highest price in town for it as well (AFAIK, at $8 a pint), the beer tends not to sell out all that fast when they do have it available. So if that's not a concern (exhorbitant prices; at least by PDX standards), then the APEX is probably going to be your best bet (though as others have mentioned, places like the Horse Brass, Belmont Station, County Cork and various other places in town also will have it avaiable from time to time as well). Good luck.
$8 for my first taste of Pliny isn't gonna hurt much given our stupid beer prices in Canada. Thanks for the info.
