You have a good point. After attending Weihenstephaner Brewing Schooling and working in the industry throughout Europe, I have seen a surge in over-hopping to create a new flavor profile. The American Craft Brewer has created a trend of hopping to create a new genre of beer. More power too them. I remember when Brouwerij Van Eecke's Popering Hommel Bier was the hoppiest beer on the market (mid 1980s). I personally don't mind an aged Imperial IPA, I'm not into the excessive citrus and tropical profiles. Nonetheless, the American Craft Brewing Industry has truly created a fad that emphasizes the hop character as the primary component of the beer (Stone, Russian River, Heady Topper, etc...). For some, that's great, but for many longtime beer connoisseurs, like myself (over 25 years), its sometimes a detracting quality. It's hard to say if this hopping trend will continue; or go by the waste side like the mosts fads.

They're beginning to use different American hops and fashioning more hop forward beers, while keeping the strong malt base. Urthel (maybe Dutch/Belgian hybrid), La Chouffe, and others have hoppy, but not boozy, new world beers.

I'm with you on this one and I'm not even from America. I'm so bored of beer that tastes like tropical fruit juice.

Some of you have heard this but.. I just got back from Belgium last christmas. We were in brussels (american spelling). We hit the best beer bar we could find. It was a lovely place with fun beer tenders. They were all tripping over their selves trying to get American Midwest hop beers. They love them. They were asking us for suggestions. midwest America is making the best beers in the world right now and have set a precedent for the rest of the world. The first in line is Italy who are beginning to supply europe with hop beers. The reason being that the american midwest and places like Italy are some of the best places to grow the hops.

Enough with the bashing of hops already! If you don't like hops, don't buy hoppy beers. If I don't have my weekend dosage of hops, I'm depressed all week.

Crazy hoppy beers are rolling out in droves because a TON of people love them and will buy them. Not so much a matter of being trendy, in my opinion, but rather filling that demand for the next biggest, hoppiest beast.

this thread topic is so 2011. the beer talk section of BA is like a giant vortex of the same topics, constantly being reused whether its every 3 months or every 3 years.

Isn't there anything else to talk about like how we can brew with weed or which beer didn't live up to your expectations..................

A well thought out response. European beer became my 'go to' beer starting in the early 70s and although I drink a lot of American craft beer now, some of the heavily hopped American beers have an overly piney or citrus flavor that limits them to just one or two for me (and I know this is just a matter of taste). I guess the only real issue I have with heavily hopped beer is that more brewers seem to be using a heavy ration of American hops when it's not really appropriate for the style (e.g. a supposed pilsner that tastes more like an APA).

Wouldn't be the first time that an inferior product gained market share due to popular "demand."

p.s. Thanks for the lesson on Munich Big 6 brewing!

Seems to me that any brewery making their first IPAs and DIPAs now are a bit behind the times. The new trends seem to be in obscure styles like Berliners and Goses, brett and other wild ales, plus oddball sour and smoked beers.

But whatever the case, there is plenty of diversity in the beer world. Hops are tasty to a lot of people, I'm almost a decade into craft beer and I still love hops, and IPAs are getting even more and more interesting and delicious. It's like a cheeseburger or a basic rock song. There's a reason why so many people like them.

OP, you need to wash your mouth out with soap after sayin an unkind word about the hop.

You will drink them, and you will like them. End of story.

Complexity isn't just found in the Hops. Belgian styles are really more complex IMO.
