I was @ small town brewery this weekend and Tim the owner/ master brewer gave me a taste of his new 30-40% rootbeer. This stuff is strong!!! its an after dinner sipping beer. He is a very nice guy spent alot of time explaining his small brewery, and the history behind it, he let me sample his 20% root beer , his hard apple cider, and his new 30-40% rootbeer. He has not pinned down the exact ABV as he is still waiting lab results. But i can tell it will be a winner. He also told me he is moving to a larger location and he is ramping up production to start bottling very soon. All i can say is i wish him the best. He seems like he will go very far in his work.

i went there to buy a tap handle for my kegerator, and a shirt. I dont think he does "tasteings" on a regular basis. I think i just got lucky, he is a 2 man operation and because of how well he brews, his beers have picked up in popularity a lot. The brewery is only twice the size of my garage. But he did tell me he will be in Lombard next weekend for a tasteing so you might want to check it out, the lines will get long fast.

You take Bonner road to the next street and turn, I know it is in a warehouse not sure witch way it faces, but it has a poster in the window that says adult root beer with a picture os a cartoon dog ridding a skateboard. Hope that helps. Cheers!

It will be very interesting to see how Small Town will defend it's 80 proof beer against accusations of their using grain alcohol to boost the ABV.

Well when i was there he showed me his step by step process, and it didnt include adding grain alcohol. Also i think i could tell the differance, and i have never seen root beer head fall like a stout it cascaded like a waterfall down the glass, i dont think hard alcohol does that.

That's tough to swallow, seeing as there is no commercially available yeast - ale, wine or otherwise - that can ferment above 22%. Even Boston Beer Co's Utopias yeast strain maxes out around 25%.

Small Town and Binny's parted ways as far as selling their kegs. Just an FYI if anyone was looking to get a keg.

Can you legally ice brew/distil in illinois as a beer brewer? I thought some states had wacky laws regarding it (Wisconsin & NG Iced Barleywine which I thought they got in trouble for?).

And while i was there thoe im not a brewer he said he had come to the new root beer by mistake, something about him putting in the yeast, falling asleep, then waking up the next morning and i think his son also put in the yeast as well cause he thought he didnt the night before. Like i said im not a brewer i just know what really strong root beer taste like. Im not here to argue but i did want to tell about my experaince to my fellow BA people. If you would like to ask him yourself e-mail him. I bet you would get a better understanding of how it all came together. But all in all the man is a very nice guy and i cant see him trying to trick the public.

Maybe he brews it in a magical cauldron full of grain alcohol as well?
