So I just popped a bottle of Smuttynose IPA bottled 8/5, call it reasonably fresh. Poured it, tasted like bitter, super overly sweet malty caramel, herbaceous crap. Its pretty fresh, and this is not what I remember this beer tasting like whatsoever, they all went down the drain immediately. Aftertaste is friggan awful. Whats up?

I've some in the cooler now, and you're right, they're not supposed to taste that way. I've no idea why though, perhaps others will venture an opinion.

Bottle said best before, 2/5/14. Case said bottled 8/5/13. It was awful. I'm sending smutty and email.

So all the bottles in the case taste the same...bad? Just trying to get the whole picture?

My six pack does, I didn't buy a whole case. I popped open a case and grabbed a six pack.

So I guess I will say that because this batch is a month old and we haven't heard any other complaints on the boards or elsewhere (as far as I know) this is possibly a case of mishandled beer. And I don't necessarily mean by you but maybe it was left in a hot truck or Miley Cyrus breathed on it or something. Just seems weird that this is the first we are hearing anything. An email couldn't hurt I guess.

He's from Pennsylvania where the case laws suck ginormous ass and he pretty much has to buy beer by the case from the distributor.

It was kind of just a joke playing on the old misconception that in PA you can't buy anything less than a case. This isn't necessarily the case anymore (pun intended) as you can buy cases, six packs or single bottles in PA now....just usually not in the same place.

Used to be my go to ipa. Not so much anymore. I have also had some bad bottles that tasted nothing like an ipa to me.

And singles and 6-packs have their prices horribly inflated. Cuz that's just how we roll.

Used to by it a lot. It is just way to inconsistent.... Some I have gotten have been amazing, some just plain not good. Wish I could trust it more so I could drink it again, I just cant.

That is simply not the case, (pun intended, hell its friday!) in PA you can buy six packs, bombers, growler fills, and twelve packs up to about the equivilant amounts as twelve packs of pounders from; grocery store deli's, bars, breweries and bottle shops. Distributors however, can only sell by the case or keg. We have a great overall beer situation in PA.

Never had a bad FinestKind myself, and I have gone through a lot of it. Most of it on tap out of my kegerator though...

Yep, it's an old joke. I used to live in Philly for 2 years before moving to Wisconsin and I know the situation very well.
