Beers you've overrated, but just can't help it

For me, it was the beer that got me started. Being a Bud guy since my college days, my wife and I took a trip to Disney World during the International Food and Wine Expo at EPCOT. There was more beer than I'd ever seen and I tried my fair share. One beer stood out, Sam Adams Cherry Wheat.

I was pretty stinking drunk the first time I had it, but remember telling my wife it was the best beer I'd ever had. I told her I wanted to go back the next day and have it again sober, so we did. It was still the best beer I'd ever had.

After buying a case as soon as I got home, I rated it at 4.2 on this site. I know it's not that good, but I just can't help myself. Even after some 785 different beers, it's got a special place in my heart.

For me, it was Erdinger Weissbier. Erdinger opened me up to Hefeweizens, and in turn Hefeweizens were the doors I passed through to truly begin to explore beer.

Hey, if you liked it that much, I don't think you over-rated it.

Because it got me into craft beer and I always enjoy it, I have highly overrated Stone Arrogant Bastard and Oaked Arrogant Bastard. Both great beers, but not worthy of the 4.66 and 4.8 I gave them

As someone else pointed out, if you liked it and still do your ratings are just fine.

Notice also that to say you "over-rated" it implies that the folks who gave it low marks are right and you were wrong to enjoy the beer. While they may not have enjoyed it, you did, so your ratings are right on for your tastes. And really that's what its all about. We may use the opinions of others as an aid in making our own choices but at the end of the day if the rating you gave it reflects how you feel about the beer, they your rating is right where it should be, regardless of what others think.

What djaeon said. It's as good as you think it is. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

For me, it's Guinness. I don't care what people say. Every now and then, a Guinness really hits the spot.

    Cheers,
    Jeff

I think many of my very earliest ratings are a little over rated. My first in each style is usually a bit over rated and my beers I got in trades seem to be a tad over rated. =)

Drink 'em all again and re-rate is what I say.

I think that I personally overrate headhunter and breakfast stout, but they are my two favorite go to beers. IMO their about perfect

My Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale review is a botched overrating, BUT I swear to the beer gods that I bought and consumed the most perfect one ever made -- not every bottle tastes as good as this one in particular I speak of. Most are great and the average is good, but this ONE time, man ... just about the best beer experience ever.

I've considered editing that review and altering the numbers to something closer to the average reality, but screw it. That review fits for that time, so let it be.

Pliny the Elder. My first "wow" beer, but after experiencing many other beers since then, there is a ton that I would take ahead of it. I now pass on it when I can buy it, I passed on it at the bar two times this week (though I did get one last night). It's good (great even) but it is not the "end all be all." My first sip though... That is still why I hold it dear.

Breckenridge Oatmeal Stout. I think it was the first craft beer that made me say "Holy shit this is good."
It's perfect to me, not so much to the BA community. I regret nothing. I'll always stand by that beer.

Rampant DIPA, I know it's not the best, but it's decent, cheap, and widely available.

I don't rate or review but the closest thing I've had to having my mind blown by a beer is Marshall Zhukov. I have had many world class brews but there's no way it would get less than a 5 in every category from me. There would be no way for me to judge it fairly agaisnt others in the style or in an unbiased way. By sheer coincidence, because I never sought it out, I ended up drinking a beer that is perfectly suited to my taste. So I would overrate the shit out if it.

Probably Sierra Nevada Porter and Stout- but not by much. I really love those beers and have spent many an evening drinking them in quantity- and yet I never get tired of them. It's just too bad that I can't get sixtels in NJ, cuz those are two guys that are meant to be consumed by the pitcher.

I feel like I overrate witbiers. For example, White Rascal, Clown Shoes Clementine and Weyerbacher Blanche (now known as White Sun Wit) all are not-so-complex wheat beers with a lot of banana and bubble gum flavors and I'm a sucker for that. Also, the Brooklyn Cuvee La Boite I had a week ago was a total banana bomb and I loved it. What's a guy gonna do?

I'm the same way with saisons. Just in general, I love the style and it usually hits all the right notes for me. Make a crappy saison though and hell hath no fury...

Leiney's berry Weiss. My wife loves it more than the other B.S. malt beverages, and she is not a beer drinker, so this is a very good thing for me! I have become a beer snob according to her. And I am happy to agree!

Goose Island 312 was the first "micro" i really dug. Still a go-to in a pinch, but have found plenty of better options, but it will always be my first love

90 Minute. I know it's a good beer, but to me the first time I had it, it was the greatest thing I've ever tasted. I was completely sober. I don't actively trade for it, but I've gotten it as an extra multiple times and that label gives me goosebumps.
