They're distributing through Capital Beverage in ATX, I know that.

Who is brewing this for them?

I like the Tavern as much as the next football fan, but the bars they've chosen for their initial rollout don't suggest to me that these guys are targeting serious beer geeks. I'll probably give them a try eventually.

I watched the US Mexico game at The Tavern last night and saw they had Guns & Oil's Maverick, so I tried a sample. As a fan of lagers, it was particularly disappointing. Initially mild tasting, the beer finishes on a sweet note. Disappointingly one of the worst local beers offered in Austin. I agree with the guy above me, rolling out this product at Abel's on the Lake and the Tavern suggests they aren't targeting serious beer nerds. Don't hold your breath for this one, it will only disappoint. 1.5 / 5

PS their launch party is this Friday the 13th at Hill's Cafe. These guys are doomed.

At least they're not trying to aim as high as Fireman's 4 right out of the gate......

If we were putting down 4 Squared in this thread I might have to cut someone!

Agreed. 4 Squared is quite the tasty beer. More brewers should want to brew beers like that one. :grinning:

the above quotes are from the G&O founder, posted on another forum. safe to say they're not necessarily targeting BAs.

Hi new user on BA. Anyone know why Guns and Oil Maverick Lager is not listed in the Beers database?

not as craft as firemans 4........

not for nothin, is firemans 4 craft?

but seriously, firemans is good but its probabliy the worst of RA's line of beers and im sure its made as a gateway. (although ill drink the shit out of it when nothing else is on tap worthy)

ps. love four squared and its not even a style i usually like!

from what I heard, this is a frat boy cashing in on the craft boom with lots of marketing. Contract brewed in NM, right?

Remember "Churchkey"? Now we have KKCO beer. "Ass Kisser", anyone? Gimmicks.

There will always be people who want to cash in on a trend, especially when it's a trend as popular as craft beer.

Why all the hate? Is this a beer that most on this site are seeking out? Probably not. I know I am not going to seek out this one. But seriously, not every new brewery that opens up is going to have serious beer nerds as their model drinker. From what I can tell, G&O is targeting the BMC crowd and looking to show them that not all non-BMC beer is unapproachable. From a business stand point, I think there is a market for that and good on this crew for going after it.

    Just my 2 cents....

I stumbled upon the brewery by accident while doing brewery tours in Albuquerque. It was sorta humorous that the only place I have had it was in New Mexico.

With that said, I know the guys behind are working towards building a local brewery. They did not have the money to go all in from the beginning. I am not a fan of their first beer, but I am going to hold out on judging them until they actually start releasing other beers. From what I have heard, they should have it up in running in the next year.

I thought this was Beeradvocate, not Ethical Business Practices Advocate. :grinning: No need to refute it. I agree with you all the way. I'm all for supporting local businesses. Especially when they are, you know, made locally. I think what got to me is this mentality of hating on something because it does not meet some undefined definition of what this group thinks of as "craft".
