Spent last 4 days in München with a flying visit to Bamberg. Much fun, bier & food was had.

    Here is some bier/essen ****!

First/closest stop to the hotel was Altes Hackerhaus
    [IMG]

    Helles was fine, nothing outstanding
    [IMG]

Over to Viktualienmarkt to Der Pschorr
    [IMG]

    Weissbier was excellent
    [IMG]

Hunger strikes! To the Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl!

    Der Glöckl-Platte!

    Augustiner Helles vom Holzfass. Delicious!

    The dunkel was even better!

Met a lovely old couple on holiday from Hanover who insisted beer should only be drank by the quarter litre for freshness! I disagreed, the beer didnt hang around long enough!

All went south after a few more and ended up in the Hofbräuhaus

    Hangover cure at Viktualienmarkt

See Tegernseer have opened up a place at im Tal, didn't go in but would be interested to here any reviews?

    Onto Augustiner Großgaststätte
    [IMG]

    Helles as good as always
    [IMG]

Paulaner Bräuhaus was closed at last visit in May, but has now reopened following a refurb

What a disappoint! Its trying to be an upscale trendy wine bar! Soul-less!

    However, the kellerbier was excellent

    Löwenbräukeller up next

    Triumphator!

    Starkbier makes me hungry!

Dunkel, good but cant compete with Augustiner

Day trip to Bamberg started at Keesmanns
    [IMG]

Herren Pils, best Pils I've had ever had

    Across the street to Mahr's

Weisse Bock. Bier of the trip! Unbelievable layers of malt depth - toasted/chocolate/biscuity.

Just in time for tapping the "U", delicious also.

    Rauchbier is calling! To Schlenkerla!

    Maerzen

Bamberger-zwiebel, what genius invented this? So good!

    Weizen for dessert

Quick trip to the Kloster but forget the bier pics!

Popped into Spezial on way back to train station

Started with the weizen, much spicier than Schlenkerla
    [IMG]

Next day, quick trip to Weisses for lunch and a last bier before the airport. Too late for weisswurst :slight_frown:

    Bauernschmaus
    [IMG]

    Couldn't resist the Kaiserschmarrn

All in all, another great trip to Bayern, makes me long for the next one!

    Prost to all!

Nice report! I hope we get treated to some Bamberg pics if you have the time! The nice thing about German beer **** is that it always pairs well with German food ****.

EDIT: Oops, took too long to respond I guess. Nice pix!

Thanks for the reports! It was awesome!!

I was salivating at all the pictures of beer. I really like German food but all that I could think while looking at the picture of Der Glöckl-Platte was: that is a heart attack on a plate!

    Prost!

    Cheers!

It was a shame the weather was so poor for the few days we were there. Would have loved to have done some outdoor drinking at Wilde Rose Keller and Spezial Keller, still not had the chance to visit them.

Did manage to get to Augustiner Braeustuben and Nockherberg too, but camera had ran out of battery by then! The kellerbier is good but doesnt hold a candle to the Mahr's U.

Im definitely noticing a difference in my opinions on a lot of Bayern bier. I used to be pretty impressed by Paulaner & Hacker Pschorr but this trip i was completely underwhelmed by these 2 bigger breweries. I can definitely see so much better bier from smaller breweries outside of Muenchen now.

The Paulaner Oktoberfestbier at Nochkerberg was particularly disappointing. I remember loving this but it had such a rough grainy quality this time.

Thats my second trip to Bamberg. Keesmanns, Mahrs, Schlenkerla and Spezial were spectacularly good. I didnt bother going into Faessla. Bottled or from the wood, ive never been impressed by the stuff.

My only complaint about Bamberg which has been consistent on both visits, and this is aimed really at Keesmanns & Klosterbrau is the beer is served too damn cold!

Excellent report and pics. Isn't it astounding to find one of the world's best Southern German pilsners right across the street from one of the world's best Kellerbiers (and a wonderful Weisse Bock)...and then be able to get the single best Rauchbier in the universe just a 10 minute walk away (and the 2nd best -- Spezial -- on the way back to the train station)? Prost!

EDIT: The Bamberger Zwiebel is one of the best German dishes I've ever eaten...and has only gotten better in recent years. I even made it a point to ask Matthias Trum about this when we sat down to talk. So good.

We talked about this exact thing! The friend i was with is from South Africa and is starting to get a feel for the German bier culture. He like the Keesmans bier fine but every beer after that i could see his enthusiasm grow! He is officially hooked on rauchbier.

Bamberg is by far and away my favourite bier drinking town right now. Not only great bier but such a pleasure to walk around and take in the beautiful scenery.

Id also just like to mention the incredible hospitality and friendliness of the locals ive met, not just in Bamberg but in Bayern overall. Its so obvious that bier is such an important part of the culture/social life and they just love to share it!

Cant wait to get to a bockbierantisch!

    Prost!

I really should remove that picture -- I was so desperate for a picture of a bierwarmer I didn't realize until later that that krug was just were they kept it when it wasn't being used.

Of course there is this more old fashioned version (found in Krefeld, I think at Gleumes but not sure).

    I have "Senior Moments" too!

It's not cancelled yet, but I expect to get the word any day now. It would have been fun, but we've been working on our alternate plan and that will be fun, too!

Awesome! You mentioned the Tegernsee Tal - I stopped in. The place looks a lot like a US style brewpub. Plenty of high-top chairs and small tables. It's also really bright and well-lit. I didn't really see anyone ordering food, so I can't comment on that.
They serve the Tegernsee helles, Tegernsee Spezial, and the weissbier from Hopf.
I don't know if I'd add it to the "must stop" list, but for people who only have a day or two in Munich - it becomes much easier to try most of the regional beers without necessarily having to trek all over the countryside. Within 200 yards of Marienplatz you can find just about every major regional brand on tap except Weihenstephaner.

I went down to Tegernsee in May and its a lovely place to spend a few hours so when faced with the decision at im Tal, Weisses Brauhaus v Tegernsee, Weisses always wins!
