I just did my first mash. One thing I haven't read about is what people do with their grains after they mash. I'm curious what everyone here does with their grains.

People generally compost, make bread, spent grain dog treats, etc. Google spent grain recipes for more ideas...

I throw them in my vegetable garden. Gives a malty edge to my tomatoes. :sunglasses:

Taste them. You will probably find they have less flavour than damp wallpaper in which case the compost heap is the best place.

I have a smallish Brute trash can I put all my grain into when done, and drag it around to the side of the house and put in the trash after it's cooled a bit.

I put some of it in the bird feeders, but I don't have a place to dump it in my yard, because my dogs will eat it, and grain is shitty for dogs in large amounts, and I can't dump it over my fence, because of the golf course.

Compost seems to be popular, but I'd mix in some grass clips or something because spent grain will stink to high heaven after a little while!

If you use good composting techniques then you won't get the foul odor. Layering with some dirt between layers of organic/green materials (spent grains, grass clippings w/o pesticides, leaves, etc.) that are not too soggy when added to the pile should produce good compost. (Don't add table scraps that have oils, meat, etc.)

There was a similar thread about 3-4 weeks on this topic that had some good tips, one of which was making granola.

I always tossed out in the back yard thinking the birds and rabbits would love it. They didn't.

Good points.. Like I said, I toss mine in the trash. I don't have the desire or need to compost, so the extra work isn't on my radar.

I feed them to my herd of shaven yak. It helps them regrow their hair.

I dump them in an otherwise unused part of the garden. Spread them out a bit to dry or they'll get moldy and really, really stinky in a day or two. When I'm tilling a patch, I'll add some of the stuff from the pile. It keeps things loose and, presumably, decomposes into something useful.

Occasionally I make some bread or give a little away to someone who wants to make bread. Mostly they get spread around the property in a thin layer, somewhere different every time. "Squirrel nutrient" I figure, or something. Tho there are plenty of wild hogs around here, it doesn't seem to attract them any more than anything else does. A lot of it probably decays back into the land, because it certainly doesn't all get ate.

You should set up a curing box in that brewshed you and your brother have and start making your own hams/sausages/salami.

I drag it down to my parents' place and feed it to their horses. I used some in some cookies before; they turned out ok, but it was an exercise to pick all the grain husks out of your teeth.
