Part 2 of my review. Pulled the tri-tip at medium rare/medium. Meat is perfect, juicy and smokey.

2nd new beer of the day was an extra I got in a trade.

Controversius Maximus - Short's Brewing Company.

**I must add a disclaimer as this beer was bottled some time in March or April, no bottle date I can see but based off some research.**

Pours a wonderful clear deep amber with some nice 2 finger head. Head is off white with more large bubbles than small. Smell is mmmm delicious....pulling mostly sweet caramel malty goodness with some hidden grapefruit hops. I knew nothing really about the beer so its almost like a blind taste test. First thing that comes to mind is arrogant and double arrogant bastard. First sip I am hit with that rich sweet caramel malt. Followed by some grapefruit and bitterness. I am getting a touch of vanilla or oak sweetness that I would almost think it had spent some time in a barrel. Mouthfeel is oily and smooth. There was almost zero lacing from the high hop oil.

Man I wish I could have tried this fresh. However, being @ 6 months old this DIPA turned into a very tasty barley wine.

    New Oktoberfest Sunday

    Greetings NBS,

Looks like a busy day here on the finest thread in the land.

The weather and weekend was fantastic here in Southern, CT. Yesterday was spent helping my in laws with some fall house chores so today was all about relaxing. We started with breakfast out and went on a couple of hours of bike rides. Right before my wife's pasta fagiola, I tried this 'fest from Sly Fox:

    New Rauchbier Sunday

Back for my second check in. This one was a collaboration between Jack's Abby and Lawson's. It did not dissapoint.

As my review notes, if the heavier smoke of some rauchbiers overwhelms you, this could be a great one for you as the maple is a great compliment:

    >>>>> New Amber Ale Sunday <<<<<<

    Greetings all:

Checking in from Eastern Washington on this late summer Sunday with a reasonably priced amber ale from Henry Weinhard's, as we wind toward kick-off of the game of the week. Go Seahawks!

    Redwood Flats Amber: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/719/5502/?ba=RJLarse

It's not a bad brew, and these Henry's brews tend to be staples at my house, so I expect to see more of this around, especially as we move from summer to fall.

Dog days of summer here. Hot and humid with temps in the upper 80's. We are past due for our first frost but it's not in the forecast for this week either.

    Until next week,

    Happy Trails and GO HAWKS!

    New "2-Beer" Sunday

Stinking hot and humid in NE Florida. Can't wait for the first "real" cool front of fall. I've been drinking a lot of homebrew lately, so haven't contributed to this forum, but got in two new beers today!

I was excited to see my local TW got Anchor's Breckle's Brown Ale. I'm a long-time fan of Anchor and was happy to be able to try this one. I liked the beer a lot, but it seemed to miss the mark for me on style. It lacked the subtle roast character most brown's have, and seemed much more like an amber ale to me. The beer had a nice hop bitterness, but not a lot of aroma or flavor, so the citra hops almost seems like a waste.

My homebrew club had their monthly meeting last night, and I got a Big Eddy RIS as a raffle prize (along with a sweet Pilsner Urquell mug!). Thought I'd give it a try today. Being a Leinenkugel offering, I wasn't expecting too much, but was pleasantly surprised. The beer lacks the complexity of the best RIS examples, but was quite enjoyable.

    Cheers, all!

Funny that we'd both have the same outdated d-IPA. Pretty similar descriptors as well.

It's been a relaxing Sunday down here in Louisiana. Still quite hot, especially for mid-September, but I spent most of my day in the AC, enjoying a huge Saints win on a last-second field goal. Enjoyed a nice fresh can of NOLA Hopitoulas during that! For my first NEW beer of the day, I picked a Lazy Magnolia new seasonal. It was okay, but not great, still working my way through it:

NEW Ales of various Pale Varieties AND ASS WHOOPING sunday
    8-Bit Pale Ale by Tallgrass
    and
    Fresh Squeezed by Deschutes

Today has been an interesting day. It is very rare that I get hangovers, but apparently last night involved too much gin, because I woke up with broken glass and a serious headache. Luckily the Seahawks weren't playing until the late game. Showers and copious amounts of water later (I literally have a normal saline bag hung from my lamp for just such an occasion. I forgot to bring an IV kit, though, sad face), my head finally cleared and I was able to enjoy the afternoon. I was all planning-ahead-y last night and took care of most of my weekend responsibilities then, so I hobnobbed with some of my best friends on the interwebs until it was time to go watch what promised to be a slugmatch between heavyweights. Well, apparently someone forgot to let the 49ers know to even try to live up to their fans' hubris [;-P], and after a rain delay (stupid rain delay... I have to wake up in 6 hours!), the first half lived up to the billing of defensive intensity. The second half, though, was hideously ugly and deliciously beautiful, all at once. Found a new place to watch games nearby, with excellent draft selections and super tasty wings for 50 cents. Pretty much a winning evening. Go Hawks!

As for the brews: I was thouroughly impressed by the 8-Bit, and while I was mulling my options for my second brew, they finished off the keg that was sitting in front of the Fresh Squeezed. When I learned this I was ecstatic, as I regretted having missed out on it when I saw it in stores. As much as I enjoyed the 8-Bit (quite a bit, as a matter of fact), the Fresh Squeezed was even better, an enticing blend of juicy hops balanced by a sweet backbone, which I love in a good IPA. Cheers all, and have a good week!!
