I had an ice cold Miller Lite today, it was my first one in a very long time. I honestly can't remember the last time I drank one. Anyway, it was after I was stuck on a boat with a bummed motor for 5 hours in 90 degree heat, 100% humidity, and no breeze. The guys that towed us back were drinking the pint cans, so I figured I would say thank you by getting them gas and a pack of them for their help. They were extremely thankful and gave me one. It was the best Miller Lite I've ever had. Too bad I don't plan on getting stuck in those circumstances again, so I probably won't have another one.

Here's my take. A "snob" is someone who actually asserts his opinion. You don't like something and say so? Well, you're a snob, now... You just hurt a bmc lover's feelings. You snob who has to pay more for his beer!!!! (shakes fist.)

Fuck that! A bmc lover is a snob, actually. Let me draw an comparison with music: I listen to a lot of different genres of music, and I appreciate different styles done well (just like with beer.) And yet, when I claim to not like a certain band, I'm told that I'm a snob, need to be more 'open minded' and appreciate all genres. I say that I do, but that band sucks, anyhow. This is what brings me to my ultimate point! A BMC drinker is the snob because he won't appreciate all styles (genres.) I have tried so many styles of beer in an open minded fashion, and yet the BMC lover is the snob because he won't branch out and...hahahaha, I like to post when I'm buzzed sometimes.

A snob is someone who believes his tastes are superior to others that do not share the same view.

I try to be a beer geek, and not a beer snob. If someone likes BMC, more power to them. I don't claim to drink better beer.

Actually, I get made fun of by my family and a couple BMC drinkers more often than I ever see my craft beer friends rip on them. It's always "Nice girly beer there" or "How much was that bottle? Why would you pay that much??"

Of course it's all in fun when it's your family. I usually reply with something like "Because I like my beer to have flavor"

If it was a stranger I'd just say "your mom", and would then slap his beer to the ground forever scarring him emotionally.

If you look down on people whose tastes aren't as evolved as yours, you might be a snob.

If you describe people who don't have the same tastes as yours as having tastes not as evolved as yours, you're definitely a snob.

WTKeene and jivex5k's definitions come closest to what I'm thinking. And I'd definitely rather be a geek than a snob, whether it be regarding beer, coffee, cheese, or whatever, and I hope my friends and customers see me as a geek rather than a snob.

Beer snobs, foodies and wine snobs. They are all people who are passionate about something. A real beer snob is a person who flaunts their expensive rare beer and and says things like "oh you're drinking that?" Like "poor you. "

Snobbery is not an opinion, it is an attitude. If you enjoy whalez, drink all the whalez you like. If you enjoy fizzy, yellow beer, drink all that you like. If one of the those people feels the need to personally insult the other, that person is a snob.

Everyone believes this. The alternative is to listen to your music with an uneasy feeling that you ought to be listening to Top 40 instead of what you actually like (or Beethoven for those here who like Top 40).

I began considering myself a snob when I couldn't drink BMC any more.

Not necessarily... IF you put others down for drinking the BMC, then you might be a snob. If you don't, you might be a geek or afficianado.
Personally, I would rather drink soda or water than BMC products. However, I generally won't say anything to those who only drink that stuff. (except one friend who was a craft beer type, and lately has been talking about how Bud Light on draft is surprisingly good.)

I always viewed beer snobbery as the complete opposite of beer advocacy. Whenever I hear the term 'beer snob' I instantly think of this guy I used to work with not too long ago.

    "You still drink dogfish head?"

"I went to this awesome tasting event two weekends ago.. where was it and what did I have? I can't tell you that kind of information"

"I wouldn't drink bud light if I were paid"

Those are just off the top of my head. I never put people down for what they decide to drink, It doesn't affect me and I don't see the point of telling someone that they can't like what their taste preference is.

Depends on who you ask. The snob haters may define it differently than others.

I'm told that because I politely refuse BMC (nearly) always and instead drink water while those around me drink BMC that therefore I'm a snob. So be it.

If you acknowledge that there are in fact evaluative distinctions with matters of taste then you're going to have a hard time escaping snobbery. If some objects of taste are better than others and some people appreciate them while others do not or cannot, then there are also distinctions that exist among people. Someone can escape this reasoning but only by saying that taste is entirely relative or subjective, and no evaluative distinctions can be made (and I think that's absurd).

And I see nothing wrong with that, nor do many here, but also you'll find many here that will despise what you've said.

Snobbery comes in many forms, but to me it always comes with an air of condescention.

I think it's OK for people to share opinions, i.e. "THIS is better than THAT". But when you take it that extra step of thinking/saying that you're BETTER, or they are WORSE because of the beer, then that's a snob.

People who call others "snob" do so because of their own feelings of insecurity. Like all name calling, it says more about the person doing it than anyone else.
