Nürnberg is pretty much macro wasteland but the surrounding counties are a treasure chest of amazing little village breweries.

Has anyone been to the Hausbraurei Altstadthof? We were thinking about having lunch there on our way to Bamberg. I wanted to try Rotbier.

Barfußer - meh; no big deal... Altstadthof - visited a number of years ago. Their dunkel was quite nice, though it's been a while... Good bier bar, formerly called Hutt'n, now called Nürnberger Alm, on the way up to the castle... quite nice! If you are there during Altstadtfest (now through 23SEP), you can sample lots of biers from the surrounding area at the stands and small tents they set up there... Prosit!

I've been; it's pretty good IMO.

Personally I would skip Nuernberg altogether and drive the extra 15 min to Forchheim and visit Neder. (Just not a fan of Nuernberg at all.) If you do decide to go, try to get to one of the Landbierparadies places in town. http://www.landbierparadies.com/

We're taking the train from Regensburg to Bamberg and have to change trains in Nürnberg so I thought we'd take the time for lunch. I read about the Rotbier somewhere and it sounded interesting.

Altstadthof is interesting and worth a visit if you're in Nbg. Was just thinking that any train you'd be waiting on to Bbg can be picked up in Forchheim as well -- so that if you can hop up there quickly from Nbg it'd be well worth it. Still, I can understand wanting to keep things a bit simpler and just wait for the payoff in Bamberg!

I am going to Bamberg as well, do you have any advice on which other towns I could visit for beer? And which breweries in Bamberg are the ones to be sure to hit? I will hit Altstadthof in Nuremberg.

Unless you're limited by time, you can actually visit them all pretty easily. There are 9, and in theory you can even visit them all in a single day. If that sounds too daunting, you can do 4-5 each day plus visit some other sights in the meantime. Kaiserdom is the only outlier (and the only one I haven't been to), and people say that's the one to skip if you have to. If you can only do a few, I'd suggest Mahr's, Keesmann, Spezial, and Schlenkerla as my favorites.

And if you're going to go to Schlenkerla, you may as well hit Klosterbräu. It's only a 10 minute walk, 5 if you can do it without getting lost in the backstreets!

...plus, then it's only another 10 minutes up that steep-ass hill to Greifenklau...and while you're at Spezial, Faessla is across the street and they have the second best pils...and Ambrausianum has such a great dunkel...err...and the next thing you know we're back to hitting them all :stuck_out_tongue:

I think the only things preventing a 9-brewery run would be overdoing it at one brewery or the fact that several aren't open every day.
If you catch the first train of the day from Munich, you end up arriving in Bamberg around 10:00AM. You can visit Fassla and Spezial immediately and cover those bases before check-in even begins at most hotels. Last call seems to be around 11PM. 7 more breweries in 12 hours doesn't sound all that daunting as long as they're open.
It seems like Sun/Mon are trickiest days.

Say what you must, 4.5+ liters of beer is too rich for my blood!

Normally I'm with you. I think because I only get to go over there once every few years for a couple days I tend to go for the gusto. Doing a lot of walking and sticking to meat (rather than pretzels) tends to help, too. That said, I haven't been able to do a full-run day. The best I managed was seven 1/2L servings on our last trip.

If you had more time in N-berg Schanzenbräu is usually worth a stop, but it's not near the Hbf so not really doable for a train change without a cab ride.

Tooting my own horn, there is lots of info here

If you are staying a while in Bamberg Merkendorf/Memmelsdorf/Drosendorf are an easy bus ride (5 breweries total). Merkendorf is only 1000 or so people and the two breweries had 9 beers each on draft when I was there in December. That must be in somebody's record book

You can then take the bus out to Strassgiech to Andy Gänstallers Drei Kronen (at least thru the end of the year) but it doesn't open until 4pm and the last bus is 6pm so you'd have to cab it back to Bamberg.

Other easy train trips are Hirschaid (Brauerei Kraus) and Buttenheim (Löwenbräu and St. Georgen) though it is about a 2km walk from the station to town.

The above mentioned Forchheim officially has 4 breweries but one (Hebendanz) has on the verge of bankruptcy and the pub is closed. Supposedly the workers are keeping the brewery open and supplying a pub or two.

When will you be in Bamberg?

I'll be in Bamberg for a couple days this weekend. Luckily, I'll have some locals showing me around, but still this help has been great. Thanks and Prost to all!
