Am I reading this right that batches 11-13 no longer are done in whiskey barrels? Or did they just not record the batches correctly? If so, how do newer ones compare to older? http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22893/73618
no clue but i will say i saw this review of #11...emphasis added "schwemjw Ohio 4.51/5 rDev +4.6% look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5 Batch #11 A: Black as night, a standard 1 finger mocha head and has a creamy looking texture. looks like an imperial stout! S: Dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee and a surprising amount of dark fruit underneath it all. definitely some nice roast and a little spicyness to it. Fantastic! T: NICE! vanilla, chocolate cocoa shavings, a deep espresso roasted malt with a lot of coffee bitterness. There is definitely a whiskey burn and corn/rye note on the end. There is almost a graham cracker flavor. M: Not much carbonation, very creamy, but lighter than i expected it to be. you definitely know there is alcohol in this though O: Excellent stuff! it got better as it warmed up and gave you enough of a burn to know there was some whiskey there. but its complex and balanced. alot of depth. Gonna pick another one up to age! 95 was spot on! Serving type: bottle"
All batches are def bourbon or whiskey barrel aged. I had 8 a few weeks ago and it's drinking fantastic.
I've only had #9, but i didn't even get any whiskey in the bottle I drank. Tons of chocolate & coffee, but no whiskey.
Anyone know how often this beer makes it into distro? I guess I just assumed it was a winter seasonal cuz I haven't seen it in Jersey since probably early spring. Fucking love this beer though.
I remember seeing this beer in the winter but not any other time of year. I passed on it last winter and have regretted it ever since. I won't be doing that this year.
Quit talking about this beer, guys! I want it to stay under the radar so it doesn't become the next KBS!!! Seriously though, so good - and I'm excited to do a 3 year vertical comparison of this with KBS pretty soon here. Curious to see what the group thinks!
http://www.epicbrewing.com/component/k2/itemlist/category/33-big-bad-baptist-imperial-stout August 2013 was the latest release. Time to go hunting!
When I was in SLC in the Spring (May/June), I had a BBB at the Bayou and then tried the state liquor stores and the tapless tap room at the brewery to no avail. Epic folks said they would be releasing "in a few months" because it is more of a cool weather beer. No help, but I will be back the first week of October and hope it will be available again.
I like it a lot, not a lot of Bourbon though. If I remember right cases sat on the floor for quite a while.
This is my beer. This is the one that made me realize what was possible with beer. Last year I found four bombers on the shelf in a local grocery store. Apparently no one knew what it was. I can't wait to find more this year. I also recently found some on tap in Columbus. I had a bit of a buzz going so I didn't think to ask what release it was and just assumed it was the newest. It was magical. But like was said earlier...shhh don't tell anyone
The only one I ever had was Batch 2 and the intensity of the coffee aroma and flavor really made an impression on me (not a lot of vanilla or bourbon notes). I definitely need to revisit this beer again to see how my palate has changed.
