I seen that most Barrel Age beers are aged in the barrel for a few months, 6-12. What beer is aged the longest in the barrel. Can beer be aged in a barrel for years like whisky or no.

Anderson valley 7 year port barrel stout. Gotta be the longest. Not surprisingly, it tastes a roasty red wine

Idiot's Drool was aged for 4.5 years in barrels. The results were less than stellar to put it mildly.

Utopias ... they still pull small portions of older versions. 2012 version had some Triple Bock in it from 1993.

Generally beer doesn't need to stay in barrels that long - geuzes and Utopias are an exception.
THey just need to absorb a little bit of the oak and leftover booze that's in there. Bourbon itself needs to stay in for much longer, that's wehre a lot of the flavor and smoothness comes from. The stuff that comes out of the stills is really hot and almost flavorless, it needs the barrel to mellow and absorb those colors and flavors.

I've always found the Solera method of barrel-aging pretty fascinating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solera

I know The Bruery uses this method for their yearly releases, and I'm sure others do as well.

Good example, but is all 3 years of that aging done in the barrel? I thought some of that aging was done in the bottle before being sold.

While not quite Utopias-level, the Bull & Bush in Denver has a few items that have been in bourbon barrels for 5+ years.

Rodenbach has foeders for the Flanders Red. At Cantillon I only saw barrels, some were pipes (~125 gallons) and a lot were tuns (~250 gallons). If you lone of any Lambic producer that has foeders, please let me know.

Are you sure the beer is aged 7 years, or is it aged in 7 yr old port barrels? The wording on bottles can sometimes be tricky, see for example Harviouston's Ola Dubh Special Reserve 16 isn't aged for 16 years, but it is aged in 16 yr old scotch barrels

I hardly consider Utopias beer. I'm more interested in "normal" strength non sour beers.

Anderson Valley definitely made a Port BA Stout beer that was aged for 7 years in barrels. When I had it I specifically remember saying "holy shit, 7 years seems a little rediculous!" http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/193/16689
