So.... I'm in a Starbucks in a highly affluent neighborhood in Silicon Valley wearing a Hoptimum Hoodie while its pouring down rain outside.

Soccer mom says to me, "You should be ashamed of yourself wearing that with these kids sir surrounding you!" (At least she called me sir) She assumed I was a POT HEAD opposed to a hop head obviously as I'm sure all you BAs are familiar with the artwork.

I just went with it. Didn't care to educate her. Just lowered my eyes and made my best Seth Rogan laugh and ordered my coffee.

Any other good misconceptions out there as a BA??

It's not a brewery shirt, but it's a shirt with hop cones on it and I always get asked why there's artichokes on my shirt or if I love artichokes. Makes me laugh every time.

I have a few, okay alot of brewery t-shirts and people are always asking, "oh, do you work for Summit, Steeltoe, Schells etc?" It kind of makes me feel like an asshole. No, I'm just a fat guy with a big ass beard who happens to shop for clothes almost exclusively at breweries I guess. Like I'm rocking a Gibson shirt so I must be Neil Young haha.

I remember doing a 13 hour trip to the US/Canadian border, forgetting that my brewing equipment was in the car, becoming paranoid that the border officials would think that it was some kind of drug manufacturing equipment and deciding to check into a hotel on the Canadian side purely to drop my equipment off in my hotel room. Which must have also looked pretty strange.

Given the number of BAs who like to make and snicker about the family connection between MJ and Hops, do you really expect "civilians" who only know what they've heard about MJ (or who never inhaled :-) ) to know the difference?

Wait - she's got her kids in a Starbucks? Shouldn't one avoid giving caffeine to children?

I used to wonder (usually when driving home from a bar late at night) how wise it was to have brewery bumperstickers on one's car---.back when my vehicle sported these, fore and aft...

...and afraid the local cops might "misconstrue" my support as suggesting I was someone who might drink beer.

I'm sure a Surly Pentagram hoodie down in the South would go over like a lead balloon

Really, kids will be exposed to all sorts of things that you may not want them to see. Shaming random strangers for wearing clothing with "forbidden substances" isn't the best use of anyone's time.

How old was this woman, 85? What kind of young mom, in California of all places, would be that intolerant? Kinda sounds like a made up story.

A co-worker of mine just loved her sweatshirt with a "palm tree" on it (from I believe Lagunitas), until her much-younger niece pointed out that this was not a palm tree, or even hops...

Just put some kind of Ireland sticker on your car/truck as well. You will be fine.
