I would be pissed if this happened to me. All she had to do is say they were out. Its not like its some travesty if they don't have a beer..

Mixing two random beers in an effort to replicate what you actually ordered is dumb as hell. If someone ordered a bud light and they poured a miller or coors (without asking) because it tastes close enough, shit would go down. Say you ran out and ask if they would like something else

Should have said, "when it's pouring not so brown, I'm down".

If I were the owner/brewmaster I would be pissed to hear that my bartender was doing that. I can see that kinda stuff being tolerated at other bars that serve their beer because the brewery cannot see everything everywhere, but right at THEIR OWN BREWPUB. That is disappointing.

Not only is it lame and I'd be pissed, it's illegal.

Yeah he was a complete frat boy bro stereotype bartender. It makes me sad because this bar is nice with 44 good taps, but bad bartenders can ruin even the nicest of bars.

I hate it when people do stuff like that, but I do understand why they think it's okay having only been into the craft beer scene for a few years now. To them they're thinking on a level of beer vs. wine vs. mixed drinks, rather than understanding that an IPA is NOT THE F***ING SAME as an AAL. I've had similar frustrations with bartenders where I'll ask for a really well known IPA or Imperial Stout, and they apologize for not having it, but bring me a macro lager or something instead. Then if they do it on the house - I'm stuck there drinking it so I don't look like a huge douche. It's annoying, you'd think they'd understand that if they advertise "We have Surly Furious" beer geeks are going to flock to that beer. But hey, not everyone thinks about what they're drinking.

It's one thing if I asked for a Vodka Tonic and they gave me a Grey Goose instead of Absolute, but if they gave me Smirnoff it would be a different story. This is closer to asking for vodka and getting gin. Sure, it's a clear spirit, it's the same, right??

One time I was at a really well known beer place here in Phoenix and I ordered one of the IPAs they had on draft. They brought me something that looked/smelled/tasted exactly like a Belgian Triple, and they had several Triples on their menu. The waitress had the bartender pour me a "sample glass" from the same tap to make sure it was the "right" beer. Sure enough it tasted the same. I just let it go because I was with friends I hadn't seen in a while but god damn, when you put the wrong keg on and someone catches it, fix the mistake! Either that or that was the worst damn IPA I've ever had.

My favorite is when they act like you're the douchebag for ordering what they put on the menu. It seems like now the majority of people working at craft beer stores or bars are just over-privileged college students lucky enough to have a connection for a great job, and yet they still know nothing about what they're selling. I must be getting old...

I don't think I could have let that go. At least they didn't try to substitute it with a piece of pumpkin pie.

It would have tasted the same with a cinnamon/sugar rimmed glass

Beerworks that's the first issue. The two times I have been to the Hingham one, and the one time I went to the Fenway one, were not the most pleasant of experiences. The servers seemed to have no clue at all about the beer or the menu.

George, so sorry to hear this happened, but sadly... not unexpected from this establishment. (meaning the entire chain and not the location) Great example of why I will never go there despite living in the next town. When in that area, head across the street to British Beer Company. (please don't even bring up John Harvard's in Framingham)

Truth be told, the craft beer world has left (insert name) Beer Works behind. Their beer just isn't consistently of the quality that is now expected. It's the craft beer place for people who really don't have a clue.. Not a jab at the masses, but rather a statement as to who their target market is.

This story curls the nose hairs.... Even my non beer-geek wife was horrified at the tale...

Actually, we're stepping up our beer game. Work ethic is unequaled. We give 'em 8, then hit the gate. Most workers here give 100%.

Actually it was an 11.2 oz bottle, and I'm afraid this one would be on you. To my knowledge this is the only bottling format for Ola Dubh, but perhaps you've had no experience with it. The barkeep did nothing wrong and was about to give you exactly what you had ordered. Owed you no apology and I don't see why you would have gotten angry about this at all. Just your inexperience. She probably assumed that anyone who ordered this beer would most likely know what they were getting into. And for the record, if you're 'perfectly OK with paying that price for a good, limited release of something' in a 22 oz bottle, you really should have accepted this beer. It is amazing.

Another reason I think that management was involved in this decision is that she could have said "That one's not quite coming out stout enough," which would have been a much more significant cause for concern. Clearly management made the decision on the verbiage here. Glad they didn't charge you the $8.50 though. $8.50 for anything at Beerworks... yeesh.

Bizarre story. I have nothing that approaches it.

That's a WTF in and of itself. Beer ≠ Martini, no matter how sweet and girly beers become.
