With Philly Beer Week just over a month out, I was wondering what event everyone was looking forward to this year? I just downloaded the PBW 2012 application on my iPhone, and the events are slowly starting to fill out. Monks, not surprisingly, looks like it's already got a lot of nice stuff planned. That place ought to be a zoo that week. Looking forward to Funky Buddha coming to town, along with a number of the usual suspects like Hill Farmstead.

I hate Philly beer week. Invariably, there are at least 3 or 4 events that are just so awesome, I feel as if I have no alternative but to leave work early and make the drive up to Philly/SEPA.

I still remember the one event at Capone's where I got to try draft Abyss and draft KBS side by side. I was dead certain that that was something I would never, ever get to experience.

i go for the whole duration. i tend to stay away from highly hyped events, like the ones at monks and capones and all the popular places. i really look for stuff that's more off the beaten path where i don't have to fight crowds and wait in line. last year, central waters had a great event at doobies, bourbon barrel cherry stout on draft, among others. i've never been disappointed, this is what every beer week aspires to be. also, don't forget, that the official app and event listing only contains those breweries and distributors who pay money to be listed. there are a significant amount of them that don't pay this fee but are still featured throughout the week.

Im down in South FLA (home of funky budha and CCB) and will be making the trip up north to Philly from 6-10th and need insight on the must sees and does for brew week. I know Funky Budha is making the trip up north but also heard that they will be in colabo with Cigar City and both will be making the trip up north? Can anyone verify this, and when and where this would be? Also got a good friend of mine up their thats good friends with the owners and head brewer at Yards and was promised and private tour and tasting of their creations. Super stoked about that as well. Any help on this would be a great help! Thanks BA'ers

Greatest thing about Philly Beer Week? We are so unbelievably spoiled that a lot of the stuff you can get outside of PBW. I had KBS last night at a local bar around 630 PM with less than 10 people in the bar. Not kidding.

I will only be in town for the front end of the week but I am eyeballing Cirque du Saison.

If you have an opportunity, I would choose the Philadelphia Brewing Co tour over the Yards tour. PBC is buried in the neighborhood, the tasting room is better and they just launched a new beer. The guy who gives tours on Saturdays is a trip.

Every week is pretty much a beer week when it comes to Philly

It's unfair to say PBC's tasting room is "better" because Yards doesn't really have one. But what they do have is full pints to buy. I do enjoy the free sampling you get at PBC and I think their tour is better because of the sheer amount of different spaces you go into whereas Yards is all one floor. Parking at either isn't really the best as Yards gets really crowded and PBC is in Kensington...

Even though I live in the suburbs I've never made a point to go to any Philly Beer Week events. Like it's been said above there are cool events year round (particularly the Grey Lodge's events)

I guess that is a valid distinction but I they kinda fulfill the same principle to me. Different strokes, different folks. Also PBC just bought the lot in front of their property which is now brewery parking and you can park at the casino when going to Yards. You can do one hell of a beer crawl between the two places if you have a liver of steel....I should know, I live there

Ah, I didn't know if you had to pay to get into the Sugar House lot or not (or if they towed if you weren't using the Casino). Thanks for the tip!

If you have a smart phone, I'd recommend downloading the app, it will help you get around, even though it only covers "official" beer week places. Also check out the travel guide for other bars you might want to hit and check their websites for events. From what I understand, Funky Budda will be pairing up with Cigar City, who have had some great events during previous beer weeks (2 years ago they had regular and Brandy Hunahpus at Capones, killer!)

The lot next to the Piazza at Schmidt's (intersection of 2nd and Germantown Ave) is also a good free lot to use for going anywhere in the NoLibs and Fishtown areas (if drinking, bring a DD of course).

The only event I have in my calendar right now is Forum of the Gods. I was more excited for last years panel, but this one should be fun and educational too. For $25 and four samples of one-off beers and 2 hours of hanging out and meeting owners/brewers, this event is the biggest bang for your buck as far as I'm concerned.

I have to agree we are a little spoiled here. There are at least a dozen bars/pubs in the city and burbs that do a great job getting some outstanding brews

We will be having a RR event, but so far having a more difficult time getting some of the sours and specials.....(have supplication in) More and larger/chain bars are impacting some of my ability to land great beers :slight_frown:

If you can get Blind Pig at Xfinity, how can I keep up with their volume?!?. Hope this isn't the future where high volume/clout chains get the top of the line and local crafty places get squeezed!!!

I guess... here is a quote from the Xfinity post:

victory had several locals on the menu, including nugget nectar on draft but they did not have it when i asked on saturday, drank hopdevils instead.

broad street bullies had a pretty decent beer menu as well, but again ran into the same problem, RR Blind Pig on the menu but not available, had a Damnation and some hopdevil there as well.

very cool venue. look forward to going back and catching a flyers game on the big screen.
