I see that the trend is to have a porter or stout for breakfast. The wife and I have the opportunity to do brunch today and I haven't had a porter or stout in 10 years...literally. What kind of breakfast/desert type beer would you guys recommend for a good brunch with the wife? I like quality... smooth and delicious with out tasting sweet or malty. I guess I'm looking for more creamy than malty. A chocolate/coffee/vanilla/oatmeal love fest.

I second Founders Breakfast Stout. Probably about 10-11 bucks a 4 pack. It's arguably the best non-barrel aged stout. And if it's fresh it's like your drinking an iced coffee for breakfast. Can't beat it in my opinion.

Alaskan Smoked Porter goes great with some hashbrowns, eggs, and bacon.

The tap room and restaurant down the street has breakfast stout on tap...looks like a good choice. Thanks for the suggestion ... This will be like having my first dark beer again after all these years.

Agreed on Founders Breakfast Stout. For breakfast you can't go wrong with a beer that already has the word breakfast in the title. I had one earlier, and when I found out today was International Coffee Day, I used that as an excuse to have another.

But since you also mentioned vanilla, I'll put in a shameless plug for a local beer, Maine Beer Company Mean Old Tom. And if you don't mind something with a little more "oomph" that early in the morning, I highly recommend Ballast Point Victory At Sea Coffee Vanilla Imperial Porter.

Ballast point is a little pricey for me usually, but if it comes in at a reasonable price point and this first trial run goes well I'll keep it in mind next time I buy. Keep the suggestions coming in case this goes well for future suggestions. I'm sure many others on here drink breakfast beer. Thanks in advance. All this new boom in dark beer has me curious. Maybe dark beer has gotten a lot better since the 90's? I saw a picture that (was it Todd?) threw up of a dark chocolate stout cake that looked so good. I aim to give it a whirl as hop season will be quickly coming to a close unfortunately.

Founders Breakfast Stout is a good call. Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast is as well though or Surly Coffee Bender

I've had Lindemans Framboise Lambic for breakfast before. It's very low in alcohol and the fruitiness makes it basically like having some juice with breakfast, a perfect choice really.

I don't drink beer for breakfast it makes me sleepy, but how about a BCCS, go big or go home. A bomber of CS for breakfast. I have one sitting since last Oct I need to drink, I tend to like this kinda stuff young fresh and hot.

gonna go against the grain and say I had a Rastafa Rye Ale really early one time and it felt great, yesterday I had CC Maduro Brown and it wasnt a terrible way to start, but I need to give these stouts a try it sounds like

So I'm drinking this breakfast stout. I can't believe I'm saying this but... It's good. It's so clean and it has attitude. Not at all like I remember dark beer. It doesn't make me feel dizzy or sick (yet). I'm going with French toast, maple glazed bacon and scrambled eggs. It's going to be a good day, I can tell. If you haven't had a dark beer in a while I suggest giving this one a go.

I usually prefer something on the lighter side with brunch. Witbeirs and hefes are some of my favorites as they pair well with most brunch foods.
