Don't know about you chaps- at least the ones from the US- but I've been pretty big lately on the "buy american, buy local" thing. Whenever possible and practical, why not support US businesses, and even better, why not support a local business?

Which got me thinking... would you/could you go "locals only", drinking or buying only beer from your home state? For how long? What kind of caveats/exceptions?

I'm in MA, which is a pretty good market... so I might actually give this a shot. Only purchase beers brewed in MA.

Note the purchase bit- hoping the tasting group I'm part of gets together again soon (wink wink, nudge nudge), and I'll sample anything people bring.

But could I go for a whole month *happily* BUYING nothing but beer brewed in MA?

Could you do the same for your home state?

An interesting, worthwhile experiment... a pointless waste of time... or something in between?

I could certainly be very happy buying only beer from NY - between Ithaca (Flower Power, Cascazilla, Exclesiors), Brooklyn (BCS), Southern Tier (IPAs, Stouts), Captain Lawrence, Ommegang (Belgian fix) I could get my favorite styles covered and add the ultra-locals (Horseheads, Three Heads, Keuka, Cortland, etc) for variety.

With that said, my favorite thing about craft beer is the variety so I doubt I'd ever actually attempt it. Interesting thought though. Some states almost seem too easy for this test (CA and VT instantly come to mind).

I think there was a thread, maybe in the old forums, about somebody who did this (or tried) for either a year or several months, can't remember.

I could definitely do this, if I wanted to. I'd miss a few favorites but Washington produces a lot of great beers. The hardest part would be skipping Belgian beers, local pickings are pretty slim in that department.

I could very easily do this in Ohio.

Edit: I'm intrigued by this idea and I might actually do it starting in May... Gives me just enough time to clear out the non-Ohio beer from the fridge this weekend

Yeah - I am happy to be so close to Jackie O's that I could be happy drinking beer brewed within a couple miles of my house

I believe that could be done pretty easily here in NJ. For a month, maybe even a bit longer. The challenge would be at the pubs, there simply isn't enough local brew widely available in the bars.

absolutely this, were really fortunate in NY with the quality of brews we have, Ive always felt (even though we do get some respect) that our locals are under appreciated. to add to the list id like to throw in my friends from Adirondack pub and brewery who make some truly phenomenal brews (i believe their IPA rivals, and may beat 60 minute). also, i know they're considerably larger and more well traveled than most, i think saranac and lake placid (fx matt) have been doing some truly phenomenal things as of late and they look to not be planning on slowing down anytime soon

Absolutely. It's the larger brands like Ommegang, Saranac, Brooklyn that really put NY over the top for me. Would make the bar scene much easier to navigate under these restrictions.

I couldn't do it in Tampa. While I loves me some Cigar City, my two biggest styles are arguably big stouts and quads, and while I could possibly stock up on Zhukov to last me during the dry spells, no Florida brewery I know of makes a quad. No Three Phils, no St. Bernie's, no Rochefort...? I may slit me own wrists.

Yeah it sucks being surrounded by the Great Lakes. Take away Detroit proper and Michigan is beautiful with awesome beer!

I could do this in the winter months when WnB and Moohoo come out, otherwise fuck no since we can't get growlers from brewpubs. If we could then I could def live off of Twain's growlers for a month or 2

Living in Colorado....I could do it.

I generally buy mostly Colorado but not 100%. I would definitely miss Deschutes if I stuck in state.
