The by product of too much in the way of hops with regard to the malt balance. IMO it sucks, it's bitter and little else, I agree id rather drink an easy Miller Lite than coke down a mediocre Session IPA for the sake of drinking craft.

I was disappointed by All Day too. Really liked DayTime and the new Central Waters Hop Rise however.

I don't understand the whole new category of "session ipa" either. What's next a session DIPA?

We have had "session IPAs" for around 100 years but many US BAs wouldn't recognise them as IPAs.

These two threads are for the same beer, Greene King IPA. In one thread it's listed as an English IPA and in the other as a Bitter! But of course, Bitter, Pale Ale and IPA commonly referred to the same beers, just different names for the same thing.
One aspect of a "session" beer used in its true sense is its very low ABV but another criterion is drinkability. The sort of beer which you don't tire of and look at what else is on the bar when you're ready for another. The sort which simply gets better the more pints you drink. And I wouldn't like to drink ten pints or more at a sitting (or a standing, I drink beer standing up of course) of quite a few low strength beers.
Martyn Cornell has written on the subject;worth reading and the comments are too

    Session beer=low abv beer.

No such thing as a Session IPA. Just a hoppier/bitter pale ale.

session ipa's are called IPA's, if you can't drink a sixer of a 6-8% brew in a night, i feel bad for you.

Some people have strange ideas about the nature of IPA. It's as valid to call beers like Greene King IPA one (which ticks all the boxes for a session beer) as it is to call the massively hopped West Coast versions. In its lifetime it has existed in many forms and nobody brews an IPA remotely resembling the first ones.Perhaps Orval is as close as it gets.

I have only had three, Founders All Day, Lagunitas DayTime and Central Waters Hop Rise... IMO one was strait terrible, one was decent, one was good.

Founders all day to me was just strait up bitterness water, which I did not care for, I question is it would be as highly regarded if it did not have the word "Founders" on the label. Not that I dislike Founders, I love them and there beers not there bitterness water though.

Lagunitas DayTime was decent, I could drink a couple, but still would not grab it over many other low ABV APAs.

Central Waters Hop Rise was very good, probably because it was more of a APA then an IPA, I could actually feel body on it and taste a bit of malt. Not as much bitterness as the other two, but more hop flavor.

With all that said, I do not understand why someone would want a "session IPA" over a nice hop forward APA.

That's a fairly ignorant statement. Did it evere occur to you that some beer lovers are not fat alcoholics?

Some of us are thin alcoholics
But a sixer is hardly a session. It's a practice for the rest of the evening, just getting your eye in so to speak.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. Like some others that have posted here, "light" IPA's aren't my favorite stlye, but in no way would I rather drink a cheap mass-produced lager. No way.

If you can drink a 6er of an 8% ABV brew and feel fine the next morning, then I envy you! Some of us aren't that lucky.

I couldn't disagree more actually. I wish there were more beers like Founders All Day. I love a nice hop bite, but I also like beers that I don't have to worry about the speed in which I consume them. Don't get me wrong, I love a beer like Gandhi Bot, but after a couple of them the wheels start to fall off.

Also, comparing Founders All Day to BMC? Ouch.

EDIT: I see you claim that you'd prefer BMC was just an exaggeration.

Session IPA, Pale Ale, Low Alcohol Beer...whatever you call it, I'm in. Like Providence said above, I wish there were more.

What would be really great is if breweries were able to make great session IPA's, can them, and sell them for cheaper than the 'normal' craft beer 6-pack price. I'm not saying they should be at the BMC prices, but maybe they could cheaper than most other craft beers. Is there a craft brewery that's already doing this?
