Have these cans landed in anyone else's area yet? Let's talk about how great this beer is. Honestly, this is probably one of the best porters I've had in recent memory. Wish it was a year round offering, as it would be in my fridge constantly. Tallgrass has really seemed to be stepping up their game in 2013 with Ethos and now this.
I love TG, but I wasn't super impressed with the ZM I had at ABR. Maybe my taste buds were a bit off after sampling the Bells Black Note a couple of doors down.
It was supposed to come in for delivery this week, hopefully it does. I drank 4 or 5 cans of it at Rewfest in Iowa City, pretty solid porter.
I did not get a chance to try this at ABR but my buddy who's the sorta Tallgrass Mascot (the dude in the suit and rocking mustache walking around, looks like the guy on the Oasis cans) showed me the can, I love the textured can Gonna have to grab me some when it hits. Although I really just want vanilla bean Buffalo Sweat.
We must be the forgotten ones here in Waterloo/Cedar Falls. I haven't even seen Ethos around here yet. I'd love to see both Ethos and ZM up here!
I think it has a great balance of chocolate with a tad bit of coffee coming through from the roasted malts. A little bitterness on the backend from the hops. And I like the thinner mouthfeel of this...not thick and syrupy like some porters/stouts can be.
Zombie Monkey is available at Lake Wine and Spirits, not in the cooler yet, but by the rest of the TG cans
Two things...when people write TG my brain goes in a totally different direction than Tallgrass. Second, I can't believe there is such an average outlook on this beer from so many people. At $7.49-$7.99 a four pack with great coffee flavor I assumed more people would love it. Maybe it needs to spend 18 months in a barrel for excitement to exist!
I was in the local Hy Vee Wine and Spirits today and talked to a (distributor rep?). He told me no Zombie Monkie in CF/Waterloo this year, "maybe next year." Nothing specific about Ethos. Ugh. I'll have to make a trip to Ankeny I guess.
Having my second of the night and agree with your assessment. Medium body, but the roasted malt flavors and hop bitterness on the finish justify the "robust" label. Good stuff.
