    Hello BeerAdvocate community!

Not sure if this is an appropriate post for this section or not but...

I'm a new member here and my GF and I are really looking forward to get involved with this nationwide beer trade. We're not eligible for trading as of yet, but we will be sometime in the near future.

We're very open to trying different beers, especially those that are hard to come by. If anybody would like someone from the west coast to trade beers with please feel free to hit us up!

    Cheers!

Thanks cavedave, I'll save that link for future reference.

I'm in Orange County, California and have access to Russian River, Dogfish, Bootleggers, Noble Ale Works, The Bruery, Knee Deep, and other breweries.

Any beers in particular that folks that aren't on the left coast are interested in? I can always check to see if it's something I can get.

Framboise for the cure just came out. Have you ever traded beers before? Your best bet would be to start small with an experienced trader. Then go after some bigger wants. Its a slippery slope once you start trading.

    Thanks for the tip powz87!

To answer your question, I've never been involved in a beer trade before. I still have my reservations about the whole process but I guess it's worth a shot if I start small.

I just asked my guy for Frambroise For a Cure, I'll let you know when he gets back to me. Is this something you're interested in trading for?

As stated, start with a experienced trader and start small, like just a couple bottles. That's what I did and all has went well.

Welcome to BA OP! If you want some Michigan brews, let me know. I'd love to help with the process and to get your brews not available in your area.

Remember, with you being new to trading, MOST experienced traders will have you ship first based on no trade history...

Frambroise for a Cure is brewery only, so you can only buy it at Russian River or, of course, trade for it.

Being in OC, here are a few beers that will trade well.
*If you are a Bruery Reserve Society member, then you got access to some nice desirable beers right off the bat. *The three year-round Alpine beers (Pure Hoppiness, Nelson, and Duet) trades well. Best bet, is to drive down to Alpine Beer Co., and buy your allotment. I believe it's three bottles of each. You won't find them easily on shelves, and if you do, it's usually just one of the three with a one bottle limit.
*Kern River Citra will be released Oct. 25 via lottery this year. That beer trades very well.
*There are other San Diego area beers that does well like Barrel aged AleSmith beers, some Lost Abbey, etc.

Bootleggers, Noble Ale Works, Knee Deep, and most Dogfish don't trade well.

I'd peruse the ISO:FT trade forum for awhile and see what west coast beers are trading and at what value.

I agree start small with an experienced trader. The AleWatcher link above is awesome, read it a few times. My first trade was an open-ended trade since I was more interested in learning the protocols and logistics of trading beer (I don't necessarily endorse this), but we've become friends, and send each other beers whenever. That's the other side benefit of trading is that you'll become friends with some of them and might develop a core group of regular trading partners that'll hook you up.

    Good luck!

    1. Be generous, don't try to come out on top of trades, just try to do right by the person you're trading with
    2. Pack well, if you're not sure if its packed well enough, it's not
    3. You'll be asked to ship first for your first few trades, nothing against you, its just the way it works
    4. Extras are extra, but they're expected for the most part like a tip at a restaurant. Like tipping, if you don't send extras (or you send crappy old IPA's as extras), you're not technically in the wrong, you're just a d*ck.
    5. In any moment of question, refer to rule #1

Wow, lots of responses! Thanks for the tips everyone! I'll definitely go through all the links and all the suggestions and hopefully I can start trading without too many issues on my end hahah

As always, thanks for all the help and cheers!

Thanks Brez07! I'll bookmark this and I'll reference this in the future.

Thanks evilcatfish! I bookmarked that site for future reference as well.

Perfect! I'll take a look at what's offered in MI, or if there's anything you're interested in from the West Coast, then please feel free to let me know and I'll see what I can get my hands on to trade with.

Thanks for the tip tommyz! I did read that on alewatcher.com

@mrcraft: Thanks for the detailed response! I'll share this with my GF and make sure we join Bruery Reserve Society! I hope I can get my hands on some of these beers for myself and to trade. I do head down to SD a lot with my GF so we may be able to check out Alpine Brewery, thanks!

@atoulouk: Thanks for the cliff note version of aleworks hahah!

Lots of great advice above. I've only got a handful of trades under my belt, but I'd encourage you to do a search on "bad trader" in this section and read up on many of the infinite ways NOT to trade. Lots of history and entertainment and cautionary tales that should help you out.

Its a slippery slope. I think I made 10 trades my first 3 weeks. My wallet and my cellar have never been the same

Trading can be an addiction, but I've tried beers I would have otherwise never had a chance to enjoy, but it isn't cheap when the shipping costs add $3-4 or more per bottle.

I see this happening in my very near future as I already spent well over our agreed upon budget! Gotta do my first trades right by the veterans of BA!

This is true. I'm all about trying new things, and I'm all about craft beers, so why not try new craft beers? Even if it does get a little costly. As long as I stick to my monthly budget, all should be good in the world.

    Cheers!

Id say way more. If you're shipping costs only add 3-4 more per bottle you are doing something wrong or know someone at fedex/ups.
