So, I love porter. Love it. Trying to convince my wife that Porter would make an awesome child's name.

So I just moved to Wisconsin from New York, and there's a totally different selection of beers available out here than there was back east, and so I'm wondering: what's your favorite porter? Especially for smaller local/regional Midwestern brews, what do you like?

Had Bell's last night, and it was too bitter for how light it was. Either needed more body or less roasted/black malt (IMO, of course). Tasted kinda green.

Just for comparison, here are my top porters, ever:

    Sammy Smith Tadcaster
    Anchor
Eel River (only had it once, out in CA, but sweet Jesus, it was beautiful).

    I thought Framminghammer was outstanding

You need to get yourself some Everett.
Failing that, I also really liked Founder's Porter.

I enjoyed Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald and Founders Porter.

Founders, Eddy Fitzgerald, maybe Black Butte if you're near MN or IL. I agree that HF Everett is the best of the style, but given OP being in WI that's not terribly realistic.

Three Porters that I enjoy drinking are Founders Porter, Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald and Deschutes Black Butte. The Founders and Great Lakes should be available in Wisconsin.

    Cheers!

P.S. I will be homebrewing a clone of Edmund Fitzgerald next week.

P.S.S. I didn't mention Hill Farmstead Everett since that is a tough beer to buy but Everett is a truly OUTSTANDING beer!

Great Lakes and Founders for sure. Tyranena out of WI made a really good coffee oatmeal porter last year as part of their Brewers Gone Wild Series. Not sure if it available again this year.

Also, I had childhood friend with the last name of Porter, and that's how we always referred to him by.

Deschutes Black Butte is the best I have come across.

Ah, yeah, I forgot about Edmund Fitzgerald! Also, that beer is absolutely perfect as a chaser for a good bourbon!

Deschutes, too! I haven't seen it out here, but I loved it the last time I was in Portland.

I'll keep my eyes open for Hill Farmstead. Honestly, I'm a bit underwhelmed by the bottle shops here--I moved from Ithaca, New York (pop. 30,000 out in the middle of nowhere), and I assumed the bottle shops in Madison would dwarf the one back home, but as it turns out, Ithaca had a ton of stuff I haven't seen out here. But I'm new and need to explore more.

    Keep the suggestions coming!

Don't fret, you have ample supply of New Glarus, and Madison is such a beautiful city to live in... I visited UW awhile ago, and I still have fond memories of that trip.

I honestly think that Cisco's Moor Porter is SEVERELY under-discussed. Especially if you like Anchor, I would suggest this.

Can't believe no one mentioned Sierra Nevada porter. Also, if you're into very mildly smoked beers, Stone Smoked Porter is one of the best I've ever had.

There are oh so many excellent porters to choose from.

Sam Adams Holiday Porter turned me on to porters (not bad itself). Lazy Magnolia here in MS makes a Gulf Porter that's very tasty. Founders, of course. Beer Engineers in Birmingham makes a Peanut Butter Porter that kills at 12% (on tap at Hop City).

Edmund Fitzgerald and Founders Porter are my favorites.

Arcadia's London Porter is also very nice. Plus, if we are going to include Baltic Porters in the discussion, Sixpoints 3 Beans is terrific.

Absolutely enamored with Porters. Sierra Nevada makes a good one, also Boulevard Bully. Bring on the Fall! Tis the season for a good, hearty beer. Left Hand Fade 2 Black Pepper Porters ain't no slouch, either.

Meantime (true London porter) is best available widely. Everett is perfect but bit of a drive for me, since as far as I know its only available at Hill Farmstead or very close by. Agree on Founders, Deschutes, Ed Fitzgerald and Sierra Nevada. Will have to try Anchor again, not impressed first time tried a few years back. Anybody know why Stone Smoked Porter is so cheap - half the price of any other Stone. Agree its solid.
