I realize this may be the wrong "focus group" to ask, but several of my friends think I'm insane for drinking beer when I have a bad cold. They warn me about liver damage, interaction with medicines, etc. While I will reduce the amount I drink while sick, I would have to be incapacitated to not drink any beer. Just wondering what others think....

I have found beer is good for a sore throat. Being sick isn't going to effect liver damage, and are you really taking medication for a cold? I probably wouldn't drink if I had a stomach bug, because alchohol can upset the stomach, but otherwise you are fine.

Um.. nothing. I can't taste very well, I want to be able to take whatever medicine I want to address the symptoms if needed, and I don't want to consume anything that might depress my immune system.

Sometimes it's good to not drink any alcohol for a while. If that sounds horrifying, that's an even better reason to take a little break.

I go back and forth, depends on what I am sick with. If I am taking certain medicines, than no I will not drink. But if it is just a cold than I will.

I usually switch to warm bourbon, honey and fresh squeezed lemon when I'm sick. Makes your throat feel better and the quick buzz makes for a sound sleep.

Um, what medicines do you take when you have a cold? Do you take tylenol? Do you take anything that has acetaminophen in it (check the label)? Because if you do, STOP. Either stop drinking when you have a cold or switch to medicine that contains no acetaminophen if you still want to drink. Acetaminophen is basically liver poison; combining it with alcohol is just about the worst over the counter alcohol combination you can make. There are prescription painkillers that will hurt you less with alcohol than a booze-acetaminophen mixture.

If I feel like crap, drinking certainly isn't on my mind.

there are many common cold medications that have really bad interactions with alcohol. Basically, your liver can only process one at a time and there is a risk of liver failure. That being said, if you feel like having a beer and you're sick then go for it.

I am aware of the issues with acetaminophen and generally avoid that drug. I took Nyquil last night and the warning label says to not "take 3 or more alcoholic drinks everyday while using this product". I'm not driving and I'm not taking additional acetaminophen so I didn't think it would be a problem.

No. I don't want to miss out on my beer experience because I am sick. Brandy or a nice little bit of fruit peel candied in honey and vodka if you have a cold.

edit also make yourself this salad. Hydrating, nutritious and refreshing. Very light. It's melon cubes and cucumber with mint. I did a honey based dressing with citrus.

Oddly enough I'm on antibiotics for the next 10 days (jocks itch) and it's gonna be a long week with no sweet delicious beer :slight_frown:
If I had a cold that was bad enough to impact my smell and taste then why bother with the beer anyway

Had a friend die by drinking a beer with Vicondin, or whatever knock-off generic he probably actually took after a routine dental surgery (think it was wisdom teeth) - not sure what the adverse reaction was caused by/what actually caused him to pass away (liver failure, heart problem, etc.)

Bingo! Couldn't have said it better myself. In addition, it is not just Acetaminophen that interacts poorly with alcohol. So does Aspirin as well as the Advil/Ibuprofen group of meds. I think your best bet when you are sick is to lay off the beer and booze till you are better. Call me a prude, but that's my humble opinion.

No, you're not a prude. I'm looking for serious input and I appreciate the advice.

You're welcome. I really did mean it with the best of intentions. Intuitively, alcohol dehydrates the body. When you are sick, your body needs the fluids. That fact there doesn't make for a good mix.

Why waste a good beer when you can't properly appreciate it? It isn't as if it'll help you recover faster. Give your body a break and save it for when you're healthy.

I will quit drinking while I have a cold for the most part. I can't help but to have one every now and then. Wouldn't want it to interact with any medication I may be taking. I don't know how alcohol effects vitamin c intake or anything else beneficial so I can't comment on that. I do notice that I rarely get sick when I drink daily (my drinking habits come and go in spurts).
