Does anyone else think Ballast Point Sculpin is the most overrated/overpriced/overhyped IPA in the game right now? For $17 a six-pack, I expect a better beer.

It is a really nice IPA but I agree. As far as IPAs in the top 50 or so on here, i'd say its one of the more overhyped.

No, not a bleeping chance. I've had Ht, and PtE from the top 5 and i'd still take fresh Sculpin over either. PTE is close but Sculpin is a better value to me.

I wish I could find fresh Sculpin in my area :slight_frown:

It might not be amazing, but it's one of the only "hyped" IPAs that you can actually find without having to live on the same block as the brewery.

I think the main issue is finding it fresh. Fresh, it's absolutely delicious, old it's just ok. The hop profile is a little old school compared to some of the newer IPAs , but it's a definite standby for me. Major points for being in cans now too.

Over rated, yea for sure. Zombie Dust is cheaper than Sculpin, and ZD is just heads an shoulders above sculpin in my book. Hell this Drake's IPA I just had (courtasy of Pugartheterrible) is better than sculpin, again IMO.

Might be why Im not a big fan. Could be by the time it hits shelves in chicago, its already fallen off. I bought it the first day they delivered it to Chicago and was seriously disappointed.

I pay about $12 a six pack so, no.

At $18, maybe. It's a top flight IPA, a top 10 for year round distribution. At that level of quality value becomes very subjective, especially with distribution in mind.

I don't personally believe it's the most overrated, no. I quite like Sculpin, and while its current rating is a bit higher than I'd personally agree with (as most beers on this website are), I think there are a myriad of IPAs which have a more undeservedly high rating than Sculpin.

In general, I'd like to see people espouse IPAs that they feel are underrepresented rather than complain about or critique beers they feel are overemphasized. Negativity is easy, but it takes cajones to defend something you love.

...I bought it the day it arrived to our market, so its not like I had any options of getting it fresher. Don't remember if I checked the bottle on date, but what good would it do?

IPAs all fall off their prime at different times. Not unlike pretentious internet trolls.

American Breakaway IPA. The most underrated IPA on BA. It's killer, fresh. Apricot all over the place with the perfect amount of carb and a nuclear orange appearance.

well if u check the date on the bottle, and it is older beer, it can prevent complaining in the future,
i live in nj and we frequently get beer from firestone that is clearly from bottle dates not fresh so i decide not to buy, i dont buy it drink it and then complain that i didnt look at the freshness date, u might wanna try that

Think for a moment, if I've never had the beer before, how would I know what date is the cutoff? The beer could have been past it's prime after 1 week for all I knew. The only way you'd know is by trying it. You're not as smart as you act.

That's a perilously low bar, much to our misfortune.
